HEATING VENTILATION AIR CONDITIONING EQUIPMENT MECHANIC

The United States Space Force is seeking a Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic at Buckley AFB. The primary purpose of this position is to install, maintain, repair, and modify HVAC/R systems, including critical equipment air conditioning and associated systems.

Responsibilities

Performs pretest, operational (functional), and final testing; final tuning; alignment; and/or calibration of highly complex Direct Digital Controls (DDC) electronic systems, industrial electronic controls, pneumatic components, Hydraulic loading equipment, and/or subassemblies and Preventative Maintenance (PM)
Troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains a variety of large commercial and industrial refrigeration and air conditioning systems and supporting equipment for different kinds of structures such as large office buildings, warehouses, hangars, communication center, link training rooms, and other areas with sensitive equipment with complex problems and extensive repairs requiring judgment to locate malfunctions
Installs, modifies, overhauls, repairs, and maintains a variety of complex heating boilers and/or heating systems, single and multiple fuel power boilers, and associated auxiliary and pollution control equipment
Repairs, and/or modifies various types of electronically controlled industrial equipment characterized by moderate complexity of design, construction, and function
Performs preventive maintenance on HVAC/ systems and equipment and electronic control systems to include disassembly, cleaning, reassembly, and calibration
Plans and lays out work from electrical and electronic block diagrams, wiring diagrams, schematics, and technical orders for large complex commercial and industrial systems and supporting equipment used to condition air in warehouses, hangers, and large office buildings and mission critical assets
Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment. Uses and assures proper fit of required safety equipment and clothing, such as safety shoes, glasses, ear protection, face masks, and/or hard hats

Will be required to train/guide lower graded (or other trades) military/civilian employees
The employee may be in an on-call status and required to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays
Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance
This is a drug testing position. The employee will be subject to random drug tests. This position has been designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force Civilian Drug Demand Reduction Program
Employee must pass initial and periodic short notice drug testing. Illegal drug use by employees in sensitive positions presents a clear threat to the mission of the Air Force, national security, and public safety
This position is designated as a key position IA W AFI 36 507. Duties of this position are essential to the accomplishment of wartim /contingency operations. Incumbents of key positions must be removed from their military recall status if alternative for filling of the position during an emergency are not available
The duties of this position meets all requirements as a category 4 designation, and shall not be vacated during a national emergency or mobilization without seriously impairing the capability of the parent Federal Agency or office to function effectively. This position must be removed from the Ready Reserve and CAN NOT become a member of the Ready Reserve
Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-5300 - Industrial Equipment Maintenance Group
The screen out element for this position is ability to do the work of a HEATING VENTILATION AIR CONDITIONING EQUIPMENT MECHANIC without more than normal supervision
Knowledge of the principles and theories of air conditioning and refrigeration and properties of refrigerants and the ability to test, calibrate, troubleshoot, overhaul, repair, and install complete HVAC, electronic, and pneumatic systems, and fiber optic communications equipment and the ability to repair those systems in the office and field (as they relate to the DDC systems)
Knowledge of mechanical, electromechanical, and pneumatic principles, High Pressure Nitrogen Generation, and a working knowledge of electrical and electronic block diagrams, wiring diagrams, and schematics to understand the construction and operation of the industrial controls and troubleshoot, to maintain, repair and overhaul power heating systems and associated auxiliary equipment which use natural gas, liquid propane or fuel oil or a combination of fuels for steam or hot water production and distribution
Skill in troubleshooting electronic problems on large projects and applying test procedures; and in the use of hand and power tools of the electronics trade to include a variety of electronic, electrical, or electromechanical test and measurement equipment and knowledgeable of the makeup, operation, and installation of electrical circuits and controls to be able to repair/replace circuits and controls to heating systems
Knowledge of safety, environmental, and security regulations, practices, and procedures
Ability to read, understand, and apply schematics, blueprints, and building diagrams and complicated manufacturers published technical manuals relating to a variety of HVAC/R controls, consisting of electrical, electronic, and pneumatic
Skill in the use of measuring instruments such as gauges, meters, recorders, analog displays, and computer generated data to determine operational status and make necessary adjustments
The employee lifts, carries, and handles equipment up to 50 pounds unassisted and over 50 pounds with assistance
Works from ladders, scaffolding platforms, or cramped areas where equipment, parts, or tools are hard to reach
Work requires frequent stooping, stretching, bending, kneeling, and working in tiring, uncomfortable positions for long periods
Work involves frequent movement and maneuvering of large, heavy equipment using hoists, holders, and pulleys as required
