Principal Engineer - Cryogenic Systems

VEIR is enabling a new generation of power delivery solutions and is seeking a Principal Cryogenic Systems Engineer to lead the design and performance analysis of cryogenic cooling systems. This role focuses on hands-on engineering execution and problem-solving to ensure the effectiveness of VEIR's HTS cable systems.

Responsibilities

Design and analyze cryogenic cooling systems supporting VEIR’s HTS cable platforms
Perform detailed thermal, fluid, and system-level analyses to predict performance under normal and fault conditions
Develop and validate cryogenic system models, simulations, and calculations to inform design decisions
Specify and integrate cryogenic components including:
Cryocoolers and refrigeration systems
Liquid nitrogen distribution and piping
Vacuum-insulated and thermally insulated components
Sensors, instrumentation, and safety devices
Support hands-on build, test, commissioning, and troubleshooting of cryogenic systems in lab and pilot environments
Diagnose and resolve complex cryogenic performance issues, failures, and anomalies
Contribute to design reviews, technical documentation, risk assessments, and safety analyses
Work closely with cross-functional engineers to ensure cryogenic designs integrate cleanly with electrical, mechanical, and control systems
Support supplier technical evaluations and component qualification from an engineering perspective
Develop a deep understanding of VEIR’s HTS platforms, cryogenic architectures, and system requirements
Become fluent in VEIR’s existing cryogenic designs, models, test data, and known technical risks
Contribute immediately to ongoing cryogenic analyses, design reviews, and technical problem-solving
Build strong working relationships with system integration, heat transfer, superconducting systems, and controls engineers
Identify near-term opportunities to improve cryogenic system performance, reliability, or test efficiency
Independently own complex cryogenic analyses and design decisions for key subsystems
Deliver validated thermal, fluid, or system-level models that directly influence hardware design choices
Support hands-on testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting of cryogenic systems in lab or pilot environments
Resolve one or more significant cryogenic performance or reliability challenges through data-driven engineering
Contribute to technical documentation, safety analyses, and design-for-scalability considerations
Be recognized internally as the subject-matter expert for cryogenic system behavior and performance
Drive measurable improvements in cryogenic efficiency, reliability, or operational stability across VEIR platforms
Support cryogenic designs that are ready for pilot deployments or early commercial use
Provide technical guidance and review on cryogenic-related decisions across projects without formal management responsibility
Help reduce technical risk by identifying failure modes early and validating solutions through modeling and testing

Required

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Cryogenic Engineering, Physics, or a related field (advanced degree preferred)
12+ years of experience designing, analyzing, and testing cryogenic or low-temperature systems
Strong fundamentals in heat transfer, thermodynamics, and cryogenic fluid behavior (especially liquid nitrogen)
Hands-on experience with cryogenic refrigeration, vacuum systems, insulation strategies, and piping design
Proven ability to independently solve complex, ambiguous technical problems
Experience validating designs through testing and data-driven analysis
Familiarity with cryogenic safety practices, standards, and hazard analysis
Comfortable working in fast-paced, hardware-focused development environments
Experience supporting systems transitioning from prototype to early field deployment
Experience operating cryogenic systems outside controlled laboratory settings
Familiarity with industrial controls, instrumentation, or data acquisition systems

Preferred

Experience with cryogenic systems supporting superconducting or high-power electrical applications
