IP Portfolio Manager

Responsibilities

Provide timely, subject matter expert patent advice, guidance and insights to the Associate Directors, Licensing and Licensing Managers (Licensing Team) on patent management matters
Assume a wide range of responsibilities related to the filing, prosecution, maintenance, and defense of MIT’s patent portfolio
Manage patent portfolios in areas covering one or many of the following: optics, computing, artificial intelligence, hardware, communications, software, transportation, and/or energy technologies, therapeutic, diagnostic, drug delivery, genetic engineering, medical device, biomanufacturing, biomaterials and/or drug discovery technologies

Required

Bachelor's degree in physical or life sciences
Registered Patent Practitioner
A minimum of seven years of relevant experience, including managing or advising on large patent portfolios
Experience filing and prosecuting patents, preferably at a company or university managing patent portfolios
Deep knowledge of patent law
Superior verbal and written communications skills
Ability to interact capably with a variety of stakeholders
Organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
Problem-solving and decision-making skills
Solid interpersonal skills that reflect courtesy, diplomacy, and a collaborative approach to develop and maintain effective working relationships
Ability to work independently, and as a member of a team
Exercise discretion in the performance of all work assignments
Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented, matrix like environment and manage a large workload

Preferred

Advanced technical degree
Demonstrated understanding of the needs of multiple stakeholders in a complex academic environment
Detailed understanding of nuanced issues related to the protection of IP and enforcement of patents owned by an academic institution
