Maintenance Inspector
USAJOBS is seeking a Maintenance Inspector for the Veterans Health Administration. The Maintenance Inspector is responsible for making recommendations on changes in tasks and techniques of Preventive Maintenance Inspection Standards to meet operating requirements of equipment at this medical center.

Responsibilities
Inspects and makes adjustments and repairs on various types of Building Service Equipment and Systems. Includes: air handling units; pumps; air compressors; electric motors and controls; bathroom fixtures, exhaust fans; sump pumps; steam condensate and vacuum pumps; heating equipment; lighting, sprinkler, and medical air and vacuum systems; hydraulic and pneumatic door systems, etc. Inspection duties include all tasks listed in Preventive Maintenance Inspection Standards, Joint Commission regulation, VAMC regulations, Construction Standards, and local building codes
Inspects and makes adjustments and repairs on all classes of Personal Property valued at $500 or more that is electrically or mechanically operated. Includes: Dietetic, Engineering, and Environmental Management equipment; certain technical medical equipment, etc. Inspection duties include all tasks required by Preventive Maintenance Standards
Typical inspection check points on equipment; electrical malfunction, frayed and cracked wire insulation, bad connections, signal lamps, solenoids, thermostats, coils, starters, controllers, pushbuttons, worn and burnt contacts, brushes, brush holders, dirty and worn commutators, switches, tubes, fuses, fuse clips, loose lugs, transformers, relays pressure switches, excessive vibration, ht>t or rough bearing, mechanical failures, dirty filters, alignment of motors, belts, shafts, pulleys, steam leaks, water leaks, air leaks, oil leaks, lubrication, safety valves, gaskets, looseness, warpage, imbalance, rust and corrosion, excessive wear, chains, rollers, fans, valves, etc
Performs routine greasing and oiling of all major types of equipment in accordance with VA regulations and manufacturers' recommendations
Reports any malfunctions detected in equipment being serviced
Assigns inspection schedules and preventive maintenance protocols to all equipment belonging to the Pipefitter/lndustrial Equipment Unit
Reviews inspections and protocol requirements on an annual basis
All other duties as assigned
Qualification
Required
U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
Suitable for Federal employment, determined by a background investigation

Must be able to crawl, stoop, climb to heights of approximately 30 feet, bend, lift over 30 lbs., and work in close places where necessary to make adequate inspections
Must be able to work outside as well as inside, in all types of weather and temperatures. Work is sometimes in very hot and dirty places. Must often work on equipment with potentially dangerous moving parts
Experience: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position
Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire
Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated
The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair; Interpret Instructions, Specifications (includes blueprint reading); Materials; Measuring Instruments; Technical Practices; Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations
A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities
There is no educational substitution at this grade level
