Director/Head of Fibrosis

Responsibilities

Define and execute the strategic vision for the fibrosis service line, positioning the organization as a leader in PCLS-based drug discovery
Identify market opportunities and develop service offerings aligned with pharmaceutical industry needs in fibrotic disease drug development
Partner with sales and marketing team to achieve revenue targets
Build and maintain strategic partnerships with pharmaceutical companies, academic institutions, and tissue procurement networks
Represent the organization at scientific conferences, industry events, and client meetings as a thought leader in fibrosis and PCLS technology
Develop disease-relevant fibrosis induction models using pro-fibrotic stimuli (TGF-β, cytokine cocktails, disease-specific triggers)
Pioneer advanced readout technologies including multiplex immunohistochemistry, second harmonic generation (SHG) imaging, and multi-omics integration
Lead the optimization, and extend the validation of precision-cut tissue slice (PCTS) models for fibrosis research across multiple organ systems (lung, liver, kidney, skin, heart)
Design and implement novel PCTS-based assays for anti-fibrotic drug screening, including compound efficacy, mechanism of action, and toxicity studies
Establish standardized protocols for PCTS preparation, culture optimization, and viability assessment to ensure reproducibility and data quality
Oversee human tissue procurement, processing, and quality control for PCTS production from healthy and diseased donor tissues
Implement comprehensive fibrosis endpoint analyses including collagen quantification, α-SMA expression, ECM remodeling markers, and functional assessments
Ensure scientific rigor, data integrity, and reproducibility across all fibrosis research programs
Develop and maintain SOPs, validation protocols, and quality metrics for PCTS-based assay services
Drive continuous improvement of tissue culture systems, automation, and throughput capabilities
Recruit and retain top scientific talent with expertise in fibrosis biology, tissue engineering, and assay development
Build, mentor, and lead a high-performing fibrosis research team, fostering scientific excellence and professional growth
Establish clear performance expectations, provide regular feedback, and support career development initiatives
Promote cross-functional collaboration with histology, biomarker, and data analytics teams
Serve as the primary scientific point of contact for fibrosis-focused client programs, ensuring exceptional service delivery
Develop customized study designs and proposals tailored to client drug development objectives
Manage project timelines, budgets, and resource allocation while maintaining scientific quality
Prepare and deliver comprehensive scientific reports, data presentations, and strategic recommendations to clients

Required

Ph.D. in Fibrosis Biology, Pulmonology, Hepatology, Cell Biology, Pharmacology, Tissue Engineering, or a closely related discipline
Minimum 10+ years of progressive experience in fibrosis research, with at least 5 years in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or CRO environments
Market facing, commercialization track record
Strong background in fibrosis pathophysiology across one or more organ systems (lung/IPF, liver/NASH/cirrhosis, kidney/CKD, cardiac, dermal)
Proven track record of assay development and validation for drug discovery applications
Minimum 3-5 years of experience successfully leading and developing research teams (3-15 members)
Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals related to fibrosis, tissue engineering, or ex vivo models (15+ publications preferred)
Experience working with primary human tissues from healthy and diseased donors
Deep understanding of fibrosis mechanisms including TGF-β signaling, myofibroblast activation, ECM deposition, and resolution pathways
Proficiency in fibrosis-relevant analytical techniques: hydroxyproline assays, Sirius Red/Masson's trichrome staining, immunohistochemistry, qPCR, Western blot
Knowledge of drug screening methodologies and dose-response analysis
Familiarity with regulatory requirements and quality standards for preclinical research

Preferred

Direct experience establishing or scaling PCTS type services in a commercial or contract research setting
Expertise in multiple organ fibrosis models (lung, liver, kidney) with understanding of organ-specific pathophysiology
Experience with advanced imaging modalities: second harmonic generation (SHG), multiphoton microscopy, or high-content imaging
Background in NASH/NAFLD research and metabolic drivers of hepatic fibrosis
Knowledge of IPF (idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis) and respiratory disease drug development
Experience integrating multi-omics data (transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics) with PCTS phenotypic endpoints
Familiarity with automation and high-throughput screening adaptations for tissue-based assays
Business development experience including client engagement, proposal development, and contract negotiations
Established network within the pharmaceutical fibrosis drug development community
