Responsibilities
Lead, mentor, and supervise a team of IT operations staff and database administrators (DBAs)
Conduct performance evaluations, provide training, handle hiring/recruitment, and resolve conflicts
Delegate tasks, foster collaboration, and promote professional development
Oversee database performance tuning, monitoring, backups, recovery, and security
Ensure high availability, data integrity, and compliance with governance policies
Collaborate with the Software Engineering Teams on database design, query optimization, and integration with applications
Manage servers, networks, monitoring systems, and overall IT environment stability
Handle incident response, change management, and disaster recovery planning
Ensure system availability, scalability, and alignment with business needs
Develop processes, guidelines for IT/DB operations
Coordinate with vendors, stakeholders, and cross-functional teams (e.g., development, security)
Enforce security protocols, regulatory compliance, and risk mitigation
Drive continuous improvement through metrics, reporting, and automation
Monitor alerts, resolve escalated issues, and provide technical guidance
Support production environments, releases, and capacity planning
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Math, Physics or related field AND a minimum of 5 years relevant experience OR a minimum of 10 years relevant experience
Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)
Must possess detailed knowledge and experience with high level language structure in C, C++, C# and/or Java relevant to Garmin's business needs
Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
Must be positive, detail oriented, organized, team oriented and a driven problem solver, multi-tasker, and self-starter with the ability to prioritize and lead in a fast paced, deadline-driven environment
Previous leadership or mentorship experience
Preferred
Outstanding academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.5)
Previous software engineering leadership experience
Proficiency in major RDBMS such as Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, or NoSQL databases
Good understanding of database architecture, high availability (e.g., clustering, replication), backups, recovery, and disaster recovery planning
In-depth understanding of operating systems (Linux/Unix and Windows Server), networking (TCP/IP, DNS, firewalls), and hardware/storage systems
Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) for database services (e.g., RDS, Azure SQL)
Experience with monitoring tools, automation scripting (e.g., Shell, PowerShell, Python), and ITIL processes for incident, change, and problem management
