Responsibilities

Manage Cost Observability: Serve as the owner/architect for CloudZero. You will ensure that every microservice, Kubernetes namespace, and shared resource is accurately mapped to its owner in the Service Catalog
Democratize Data: Build self-service views and dynamic dashboards that empower Engineering Leads and Executives to see their costs in near real-time. Your goal is to make cost data as accessible to developers as their operational logs
Architectural Variance Analysis: Investigate cost anomalies not just by dollar amount, but by system behavior. You will explain why spend deviated (e.g., "Distributed Database costs rose due to inefficient Inter-AZ data transfer patterns") rather than just reporting the financial variance to the budget
Curate the Technical Debt Backlog: Analyze utilization data to identify specific targeted opportunities (e.g., storage reclamation, proxy usage optimization, instance optimizations)
Operationalize Savings: Translate financial opportunities into actionable Jira tickets with clear acceptance criteria. Partner with Engineering Leads during planning to prioritize these tasks alongside feature work
Architectural Advisory: Participate in Architecture Review Boards to model the financial impact of design choices—such as Multi-AZ redundancy vs. data transfer costs—before code is written and decisions are committed
Unit Economics Modeling: Develop models to track Cost per Token and Cost per Transaction for our high-integrity AI features
Margin Protection: Analyze the financial impact of "Agentic AI" loops and provide early warnings to Product Managers if usage patterns threaten gross margin targets
Commitment Management: Lead the technical modeling for Reserved Instances, Savings Plans, and Enterprise Discount Programs (EDP). You will provide the data that gives Engineering the confidence to sign multi-million dollar commitments
SaaS & Vendor Efficiency: Monitor spend on 3rd party SaaS (e.g., Snowflake, Elastic, Clickhouse), identifying usage inefficiencies to support contract renewals
Establish Guardrails: Define and monitor budget thresholds and anomaly detection alerts that prevent "runaway" spend without stifling innovation

Required

5+ years in Cloud Financial Management or a Technical Analyst role, with at least 2 years embedded within an Engineering, DevOps, or SRE team. Pure FP&A/Accounting experience without direct engineering interaction will not be sufficient
Deep understanding of AWS cost drivers (EC2 families, Data Transfer, RDS, S3 tiers). You don't need to spin them up, but you must know exactly how they are billed and how they connect in a system diagram
Expert proficiency with CloudZero (or similar FinOps platforms) and surrounding visualization suites
Familiarity with Jira and Confluence is essential—you will live in these tools alongside the engineers
Proven ability to investigate the technical root cause of a cost spike and present a compelling business case to Engineering Leadership to get the fix prioritized

Preferred

Ability to read a basic Kubernetes dashboard (understanding Pods, Nodes, Namespaces) to facilitate better container cost allocation discussions
Familiarity with Python or Go to automate data retrieval or custom report generation is a strong plus
FinOps Certified Practitioner (FOCP) or AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner
