Responsibilities

Coordinates and performs circulation services. Communicates library procedures and practices in areas such as, but not limited to public service, library, and reserve policies. May schedule circulation staff to accommodate fluctuations in customers
Assists students, staff, and the public by answering questions on the use of the library, internal and external resources, and location of materials. Provides instruction on the use of computers in the library. Processes a full range of library material and fee transactions
Conducts "walk-and-talk" orientations for student-patrons in areas such as general use of the library, periodicals, bibliographic search, internet search, or use of electronic media
Processes student Cal-West consortia inter-library loan requests. Searches and transfers requested materials to locations and individuals
Processes and maintains records for requests, receipts, and returns of library system materials. Maintains records for lost and overdue books, fines. May enter into transcript holds based on student account balances
May mend and repair book and non-book materials. Disposes of damaged or outdated materials according to established procedures, Board policy, and state law
Conducts and may coordinate annual physical inventory of all library materials
Oversees computer lab, maintaining computers and printers, ensures software is current and functional and collaborates with IT to accomplish updates and repairs when needed
Troubleshoots printers and computers, both software and hardware problems, when they arise, and collaborates with IT to accomplish updates and repairs when needed
Oversees the Paper Cut system, software and hardware. Resolves problems with student printing problems. Manages cash handling and prepares cash for deposit to Bursar's Office account. Collaborates with IT and Bursar's Office for repairs or problem resolution
Manages scheduling and maintenance of media rooms in library, and the technology inside the rooms, and collaborates with IT to accomplish updates and repairs when needed
Assists students with computer issues, questions, and training in the computer lab
Hiring and training new employees in circulation and media areas
Updates and ensures accuracy of department policies and procedures manuals for circulation
Collects and reports data for annual statistics reports as required
Communicates library policies and hours, ensuring website is updated, and signs posted
Using foundation budget, selects, and purchases textbooks for reserve collection, justifying expenses against invoices
Manages cash in register with daily reconciliation to software ledger. Stores cash in safe until deposited with Bursar
Opens and/or closes the building for daily activities
Maintains reports of items cataloged and cataloging activities statistics for internal library use and annual surveys
Runs and processes reports of long overdue items for collection development purposes: either re-purchase or deletion from the collection
Searches and downloads bibliographic descriptions of materials purchased or acquired into the library catalog according to local policy and accepted national cataloging standards
Maintains data accuracy of description of books and library materials in the online catalog, resolving errors and conflicts on bibliographic records
Receives, reviews and updates subject and name authority headings in the online catalog when notified of changes from a vendor of authority headings
Participates in statewide meetings on new technology and practices concerning library software
Collects and reports statistics on departmental activities
Performs other related duties as assigned that support the objective of the position
Required to abide by all District policies and procedures including Board Policy 3050 – Code of Professional Ethics

Required

Associate's degree in library science curriculum or equivalent
Two years of experience in an academic library setting
Demonstrated evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the racial, ethnic, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic, academic, and cultural diversity within the community college student population
May require a valid driver license
In-depth procedural knowledge of library methods, practices and terminology including use of library catalog
Understanding of the Library of Congress classification and the American Library Association rules for cataloging
Basic knowledge of machine-readable classification and coding
Working knowledge of automated library systems and records
Thorough understanding of library operations, goals and objectives
Sufficient human relations skills to convey specialized concepts to students, to resolve urgent student needs, and communicate with librarians, faculty and vendors
Sufficient arithmetic skills to arrange materials in numerical sequences and to calculate sums
Sufficient writing skills to document instructions on use of library services
Ability to perform the essential responsibilities and functions of the position
Ability to follow detailed procedures such as standard library cataloging and filing rules
Ability to maintain a well organized and attractive library setting
Ability to apply and explain library services, layout, rules, and policies
Ability to maintain the library office area in a manner conducive to support research and studying
Ability to deal courteously with library patrons including students and faculty
Ability to perform routine clerical and record keeping duties
