Senior BackEnd Engineer
Mentor Talent Acquisition is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to build and scale systems for an AI-driven research platform. The role involves designing backend systems, ensuring reliability and performance, and collaborating on technical direction and engineering culture.

Responsibilities
Design, build, and scale backend systems supporting high-throughput LLM interactions
Architect infrastructure for vector search, retrieval pipelines, and multi-agent orchestration
Integrate AI infrastructure across model providers, databases, and internal APIs
Own reliability, observability, and performance
Evolve the data layer (PostgreSQL / ClickHouse) and job orchestration systems
Prototype backend capabilities such as:
Async task queues
Caching layers
Retrieval pipelines
Lead backend projects end-to-end, from design through production
Collaborate closely with product and contribute to technical decision-making
Help shape engineering standards and culture
Qualification
Required
Is based in NYC and open to 5 days/week onsite
Is excited by the intersection of AI infrastructure and systems design
Has led complex backend projects end-to-end
Cares deeply about performance, reliability, and clean system design
Moves quickly while maintaining high-quality, durable code
Communicates clearly and operates with low ego, high ownership
Preferred
Retrieval systems, embeddings, or prompt orchestration
Building internal infrastructure or developer tools at startups
Working in early-stage environments where speed and ownership matter
