R&D Engineer 2/3 (Process Engineer)
Los Alamos National Laboratory is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. The selected candidate will provide technical support as a process/system engineer, focusing on developing and improving processes, troubleshooting, and ensuring compliance with safety and quality management programs.
Security
Responsibilities
Assures safety and security compliance, maintains required safety and security training, and makes safety and security an integral part of every task, including taking the necessary steps to stop work if continuing the job is unsafe or compromises security
Contributes to the research, design, testing, analysis, verification, and validation of engineering and technology solutions in support of R&D initiatives
Applies and interprets, on a broad basis, existing discipline-specific engineering and scientific principles, techniques, methods and tools to provide solutions for a wide assortment of complex problems where analysis of situations or data requires evaluation of causal relationships which are difficult to establish
Develops a technical approach and new methods or techniques, using creativity in applying standard practices and procedures, which lead to new or improved capabilities
Assists in the development of technical products such as journal papers and reports, the development of intellectual property
Sets direction and goals for well-defined tasks involving more than one person. Scopes tasks within a project and defines deliverables at task level. Leads specific project tasks to meet scope, schedule and budget
Actively participates in professional societies, National Nuclear Security Administration/Department of Energy complex interactions, special assignments. May participate in external working groups and/or assist in organizing meetings, and colloquia
Provides peer review of the work of others across organizations or disciplines
Developing mentoring skills to mentor junior staff and peers in technical and professional growth
Maintains state-of-the-art technical expertise and knowledge within discipline and develops new skills in related disciplines. Attains additional certifications and/or qualifications to grow in field, which may include more advanced educational degrees and/or a professional engineer license
Fosters a mutually respectful and inclusive work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment
Leads the research, design, testing, analysis, verification, and validation of novel engineering and technology solutions in support of R&D initiatives
Develops innovative advanced concepts, theories, methods, techniques and approaches to address specialized problems. May contribute to the development of industry standards
Develops new technical capabilities and creates opportunities to extend R&D engineering through the expansion of existing efforts
Leads the development of technical products such as journal papers, reports, presentations, and concept papers
Influences organizational, project, and program strategies and directions
Leads technical decision-making at task level within a project. Makes decisions and/or recommendations that influence the achievement of key programmatic objectives
Uses project assignments to further organizational goals. Develops and implements project management plans, including scope, schedule, and budget, for small to moderate projects and/or major project tasks. Defines deliverables at the project or major task level
Leads peer review of the work of others within his/her own organization and participates in peer review across organizations or disciplines
Actively mentors and trains junior staff
Develops and/or contributes ideas for new proposals and business development opportunities. Leads development of technical section of small to moderate proposals. Acquires internal/external funding for self
Contributes to developments in industry and develops new skills consistent with state-of-the-art. May attain additional certifications, qualifications, and/or recognition to grow in field
Qualification
Required
Experience in one or more of the following engineering disciplines: mechanical engineering; manufacturing engineering; machining engineering or other relevant fields
Intermediate knowledge of professional engineering concepts, principles, practices, and procedures, as demonstrated by experience researching, designing, analyzing, testing, verifying, and validating engineering solutions
Demonstrated experience performing a broad range of complex engineering work, including experience designing or reviewing a complete project, system, or component
Demonstrated knowledge of manufacturing, system, and component testing operations
Demonstrated experience developing, codifying, and validating engineering requirements
Intermediate analytical thinking skills, as demonstrated by experience designing and executing experiments or tests, including the analyzation and interpretation of data
Demonstrated experience with continuous improvement concepts and tools
Demonstrated commitment to high quality and timeliness of deliverables
Demonstrated ability to work independently in high-intensity environments with coworkers representing a variety of technical backgrounds
Demonstrated ability to express detailed ideas clearly in ways that build understanding, respect, and trust, as demonstrated through presentations and publications
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation
Thorough knowledge and experience in one or more of the following engineering disciplines: mechanical; materials science; chemical; metallurgical, or other R&D engineering field
Thorough knowledge and experience in designing; planning; and executing research and development projects
Thorough knowledge of professional engineering concepts, principles, practices, and procedures, as demonstrated by experience researching, designing, analyzing, testing, verifying, and validating engineering solutions
Demonstrated knowledge and experience in implementing Laboratory or similar industry objectives and other statements of policy, practice, and/or procedure
Demonstrated knowledge and experience in implementing Laboratory or similar industry policies affecting research and development activities, projects, and/or initiatives
Preferred
Knowledge or experience working in a manufacturing or production organization requiring implementation of defined manufacturing, testing and quality requirements
Experience in DOE/NNSA nonreactor nuclear facilities and radiological facilities or projects
Experience in project development, reporting, and presentations to management and sponsors
Active DOE 'Q' Clearance and enrollment in HRP
Advanced knowledge of DOE and LANL Engineering Standards and Conduct of Engineering principals and procedures
