Mechanical Engineer II (Design)

Responsibilities

The individual should have a basic understanding of electromechanical actuators, igniters, pressure vessel, solid rocket motor systems, hot gas valves, thrusters, and trade principles
The individual should be able to apply these principles independently, select appropriate materials and components, and contribute to decision-making processes by considering multiple factors and constraints
The individual should also be able to apply fundamental design trade principles and evaluate trade-offs between design alternatives
Proficiency in creating complex 2D or 3D designs, using CAD commands efficiently, producing detailed technical drawings, effectively applying GD&T symbols, accurately analyzing engineering drawings, and communicating dimensional and tolerance requirements
Understands CFD principles, navigates software interfaces, and performs simulations
Can set up and run structural analysis models, interpret results, and apply engineering judgment
Can perform dynamic analysis tasks, set up thermal analysis models, and identify manufacturing and assembly issues related to geometric tolerances
The individual is able to carry out complex communication scenarios, including group discussions, adapting style to different audiences, and demonstrating effective written communication skills
The individual develops presentations with data visualizations, advanced software features, and engaging content
The individual understands technical content, use visual aids, adapt presentation styles, and moderate Q&A sessions
The individual is proficient in writing tasks such as creating detailed technical reports, user manuals, and specifications, incorporating appropriate terminology, conducting thorough research, and organizing information for targeted audiences
The individual should be able to interpret design specifications, perform mechanical assembly, understand manufacturing tasks for carbon composites, operate machining tools and equipment, perform molding and casting, create manufacturing planning documents, communicate processes effectively, and contribute to simple manufacturing plans
The individual should be familiar with welding principles and equipment
The individual can identify and classify ceramics, select suitable materials for specific applications, and understand basic processing techniques
The individual understands mass calculation, units, and estimation methods for system mass control, planning and managing DoD acquisition programs, ensuring system reliability and safety, documenting project requirements, and identifying risks for risk assessments and mitigation strategies
The individual can perform assembly tasks, follow instructions, and integrate components for testing
The individual understands test data collection principles and methods, perform data preprocessing, statistical analysis, and visualizations, set up and operate measurement instruments, perform calibrations, and acquire test data using standard techniques
The individual can develop test plans, identify objectives, define procedures, and create schedules for simple scenarios
Designs simple control systems using standard techniques, understand diagrams and specifications, and implement basic algorithms
Conducts requirements elicitation, prioritize stakeholder needs, and document requirements using standard templates
Understands solid rocket motor performance principles, including thrust, specific impulse, and propellant combustion
Understands propellant chemistry, combustion principles, grain geometry, internal ballistics, and solid propellant manufacturing processes, including types, composition, combustion mechanisms, and grain performance factors
The individual should have basic financial knowledge, effective leadership skills, and teamwork abilities
The individual should be able to participate in procurement activities, understand the structure of proposals, and create simple schedules using basic tools and terminology
Understands basic battery design principles, cable/wire harness design, circuit board design, rocket motor ignition systems, and software design principles, contributing to tasks under guidance
Identifies common components and connections and contributes to the generation of basic software designs while following standard specifications and guidelines

Required

Two (2) to four (4) years of mechanical engineering experience
Bachelor of Science required in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or other relevant engineering discipline from an accredited university. May consider equivalent experience in lieu of degree
Must be able to travel approximately 10% of the time
