Director of Finance And Accounting
Sugar Mill Country Club is seeking a collaborative and service-driven Director of Finance & Accounting (DOFA) to modernize its financial and accounting functions. The DOFA will lead financial operations, develop budgeting processes, and ensure accurate reporting while fostering a high-performing team and enhancing member experiences.
Responsibilities
Partner with the GM/COO to direct financial operations and recommend policies related to accounting, auditing, budgeting, revenue, and cost controls
Develop, implement, and maintain proactive, structured, and transparent planning and budgeting processes
Analyze cash flow, expenses, and cost controls; adjust reporting depth based on decision materiality
Provide data-driven analysis to support the GM/COO and Senior Leadership Team
Ensure Board and member reporting needs are met in a timely and professional manner
Collaborate with the GM/COO to deliver and explain the annual budget to the Board
Anticipate unfavorable variances and recommend corrective actions; communicate regularly with the Treasurer/Finance Committee
Serve as a trusted financial leader delivering consistent, timely, and accurate reporting
Participate in Finance Committee and Board meetings, respectfully communicating and defending data-driven recommendations
Facilitate regular financial reviews with the Senior Leadership Team, including forecasts and outlooks
Partner collaboratively with leadership to support operational success
Strive to enhance the member experience in all billing and financial interactions
Oversee payroll, accounts payable and receivable, cash management, and reconciliations
Lead the annual audit process and maintain strong internal controls
Ensure timely payment and compliance with all federal, state, payroll, sales, and occupancy taxes
Prepare year-end reporting including W-2s, 1099s, and audit deliverables
Oversee administration and reporting related to the Club’s 401(k) plan
Monitor relevant tax law changes impacting the Club
Hire, mentor, train, develop, and retain accounting staff
Conduct performance reviews and support professional development
Foster a positive, accountable, service-oriented finance culture
Oversee outsourced IT services and technology investments
Stay current on emerging technologies and recommend improvements
Manage banking, insurance, contracts, and risk management relationships
Qualification
Required
Minimum 10+ years of progressive financial leadership experience; hospitality or country club experience preferred
Demonstrated executive presence with excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Service-oriented, collaborative leadership style with strong hospitality DNA
Proven ability to mentor and develop high-performing teams
Expertise in financial reporting, forecasting, variance analysis, and performance metrics
Experience working with volunteer Boards and committees
Proficiency with modern finance and accounting technologies
Experience administering retirement plans (401(k) preferred)
Strong stewardship mindset, integrity, and fiscal responsibility
Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field
Preferred
hospitality or country club experience
CPA, CMA, MBA, or advanced degree
