2026 Internship – National Security Affordability Analyst or Data Scientist

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) is seeking talented and creative students to join their team. The role involves developing robust cost estimates and performing timely affordability analysis to support DoD and US Government sponsors.

Responsibilities

Integrate affordability into the design of systems
Interpret and organize data into a structured analytic framework
Develop robust cost estimates
Perform timely affordability analysis in support of DoD / US Govt. Sponsors
Collect, normalize and relate cost and parametric data to generate credible and defendable cost estimates
Contribute to important trade space studies (Analysis of Alternatives, Business Case Analyses), economic analyses, and affordability studies (Life Cycle Cost Estimates, Total Ownership Costs)

Required

Are pursuing a bachelor's degree or higher in Data Science, Economics, Operations Research, Statistics, Business Analytics or other relevant disciplines
Have knowledge of at least one statistical analysis package (R, Stata, SAS, JMP, Python, MATLAB, CO$TAT, @RISK, etc.)
Have good oral and written communication skills
Take initiative and are self-directed
Have a curiosity and appetite for exploring and solving hard problems
Have a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale
Are able to obtain a Secret security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship

Preferred

Previous experience working with government, particularly with the Department of Defense
Experience with quantitative or qualitative research methods
Experience with data visualization methods and tools
