Media Crisis Manager

The Media Crisis Manager supports strategic communications, manages the news and media team, and oversees public relations efforts to enhance the university's reputation and handle media inquiries.

Education

Responsibilities

Leads and directs daily activities of the communications team to ensure content aligns with the mission and strategic vision of the university
Serves as the main point of contact for the University’s membership in The Conversation and develops a sustainable plan to support and encourage faculty participation
Maintains key areas of the university website to ensure information is kept current (About KSU, Rankings, Points of Pride)
Prepares stories and press releases for media and web distribution
Maintains media relationships and accurate and current media contact lists
Maintains the university experts’ database, keeping it current
Drives team projects to completion with project management of deadlines, deliverables, and multiple constituencies
Coordinates with supervisor and members of staff for consistency of messaging and timely distribution of materials
Oversees media activities, elaborates on promoting the university and colleges, and works with the team to secure local, regional, and national media placements
Manages vendor relationships and services such as media monitoring, database, Expert File, and Newswise
Remains competent and current through professional reading, developing professional contacts, and attending professional development courses and/or training directed by the Assistant Vice President of Communications

Required

Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education in Communications, Marketing, Corporate Communications, or a related field
Current, valid, and unrestricted driver's license
Five (5) years of experience in the related field
Able to work under pressure and set priorities in a fast-paced environment
Able to think critically and analytically
Adaptable and able to work independently and across teams
Strong sense of ownership and ability to work across organizational boundaries to ensure timely completion of tasks
Able to handle multiple tasks or projects at one time, meeting assigned deadlines
Knowledgeable of AP Style
Results-oriented, enthusiastic, resourceful, and creative with a can-do positive attitude
Exercises consistent sound judgment
Proficient with computer applications and programs associated with the position (i.e., Microsoft Office suite)
Strong writing skills
Organized, self-directed, and self-disciplined
Excellent interpersonal, initiative, teamwork, problem-solving, independent judgment, organization, communication (verbal and written), time management, project management, and presentation skills
Strong attention to detail and follow-up skills
Strong customer service skills and phone and e-mail etiquette

Preferred

An advanced degree from an accredited institution of higher education in a related field
Experience working with the media
Strong managerial experience
