Los Alamos National Laboratory is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. The Research Technician will support national security by providing technical support in the areas of testing, analysis, development, assembly, modifications, and maintenance of various equipment used in experimental work.

Responsibilities
Assist with the design, assembly, maintenance, operation of hardware associated with one or more of the following technical areas: materials characterization or testing; optical and laser systems; data acquisition systems; vacuum systems; pressure systems; fiber optics; electronic imaging; solid-state electronic design and assembly and mechanical systems
Follow and execute technical documents such as test procedures, maintenance procedures, quality assurance procedures and assembly diagrams
Promote a strong collaborative work environment
Communicate effectively within a project team
Work independently, with limited supervision
Work at an advanced level of technical competence in at least one of the technical areas mentioned above
Provide input into the engineering design process (e.g. drawings, assembly instructions, fabrication, etc.)
Provide input into the development of technical documents (test procedures, test reports, maintenance procedures, etc.)
Qualification
Required
Familiarity with the design, assembly, maintenance, operation of hardware associated with one or more of the following technical areas: materials characterization or testing; optical and laser systems; data acquisition systems; vacuum systems; pressure systems; fiber optics; electronic imaging; solid-state electronic design and assembly and mechanical systems
Ability to interpret technical drawings for ensuring proper configuration of engineered systems
Ability to test interconnected systems to ensure proper functionality (e.g. checking continuity, vacuum quality, form and fit, signal quality, etc.)
Entry-level experience with data acquisition hardware and software
Demonstrated experience following technical procedures with an adherence to safety
Demonstrated ability to work on tasks within area of expertise with limited supervision
Demonstrated experience functioning as a skilled worker on the design, assembly, maintenance, operation of hardware associated with one or more of the following technical areas: materials characterization or testing; optical and laser systems; data acquisition systems; vacuum systems; pressure systems; fiber optics; electronic imaging; solid-state electronic design and assembly and mechanical systems
Position requires an Associate's Degree and 5 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation
Preferred
Knowledge of nuclear weapons concepts and the U.S. stockpile or other weapon designs
Thorough knowledge of DOE and LANL safety policies, practices, and procedures
Experience in electro-mechanical and optical hardware. This includes optical cables/connectors, welding optical fibers, cleaning/polishing optical fibers, and testing optical fiber runs for timing and loss
Experience working in an environment where high-explosives are present and familiar with high-explosive safety programs
Experience with professional-level photography equipment and strong understanding of focal length, aperture, and depth-of-field
Experience with nanosecond-accuracy timing and measurement systems and instruments
Familiarity with LANL safety related policies and procedures
Experience operating additive manufacturing hardware (3-D printers)
Formal training or experience machining a variety of materials with lathes, mills, drill presses, etc
Formal training or experience working in hazardous environments such as those involving high explosives, high energy, laser, etc
Experience timing electrical cables with devices such as time-domain reflectometers, oscilloscopes, delay generators, etc
Active Q Clearance, which normally requires US Citizenship
Experience directly related to mechanical, electronic, and optical techniques used in timing and firing control systems
