Responsibilities

Analyzes, researches, designs and develops materials and their related fabrication and application processes to develop and optimize materials for use in engineering design of and/or application in structures, systems and subsystems
Applies principles of chemistry, physics, and material behavior to develop metallic, non-metallic and composite material and processing specifications, fabrication and assembly processes
Develops, analyzes and applies material properties and design allowables, processing processes and quality engineering specifications
Material analyses may include failure analysis of components, systems and subsystems, life predictions, and definition and requirement specifications
May review and approve subcontractor material processing procedures
Perform engineering services and troubleshooting for surface preparation and coatings application across all programs supported by E33 at NNS and off-site

Required

Bachelor's Degree and 9 years of relevant exempt experience; Master's Degree and 7 years of relevant professional experience; Ph.D. and 4 years of experience
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program

Preferred

Directly supports waterfront activities (includes potential nights, weekends, and offsite work)
Comprehensive understanding of surface preparation and coatings processes
Must be willing to work in industrial environments
Strong communication and project management skills
Established network with internal and external customers
Understands the use of basic tools and small machinery
Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
SSPC/NACE/AMPP Certifications
