Responsibilities
Lead the design, development, and maintenance of complex applications using Smalltalk as the primary technology
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to architect, implement, and optimize distributed systems and enterprise solutions
Integrate Smalltalk applications with mainframe systems and other modern technologies (C, C++, Python) as needed
Oversee code reviews, enforce best practices, and ensure high standards of software quality and performance
Utilize source control and bug tracking tools to manage codebase and resolve issues efficiently
Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and guidance to junior and mid-level developers
Participate in requirements gathering, solution design, and project planning with stakeholders
Troubleshoot, debug, and optimize existing systems to ensure reliability and scalability
Document technical designs, processes, and procedures for ongoing support and knowledge sharing
Qualification
Required
10+ years of hands-on experience in Smalltalk development (VisualWorks, VA Smalltalk, or similar environments)
Proven expertise in designing, developing, and maintaining large-scale, mission-critical Smalltalk applications
Strong understanding of distributed systems, microservices, and enterprise integration patterns
Proficiency in at least one additional programming language: C, C++, or Python
Experience working with mainframe systems and integrating legacy applications
Deep familiarity with software source control (e.g., Git, SVN) and bug tracking tools (e.g., JIRA, Bugzilla)
Excellent problem-solving skills and a passion for technical innovation
Outstanding communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative, geographically distributed team
Preferred
Experience modernizing legacy Smalltalk applications and migrating to cloud or distributed environments
Prior experience in financial services, insurance, or other highly regulated industries
Familiarity with Agile/Scrum methodologies and DevOps practices
