As a Senior PHP Data Engineer, you will design and build data extraction and processing services for the platform, tackling complex data challenges and influencing the technical direction of the data services team.

Responsibilities
Design and implement PHP services to extract data from web sources, PDFs, and HL7 feeds
Develop PDF parsing solutions that accurately extract structured data from complex medical documents
Process and normalize HL7 healthcare data feeds into usable formats
Create scalable data pipelines that handle high-volume extraction workloads
Implement error handling, retry logic, and monitoring for production data services
Design the architecture for our data extraction and processing infrastructure
Make technology and framework decisions that will scale with the team
Establish patterns and best practices for data service development
Evaluate and integrate new tools and technologies
Document architectural decisions and technical standards
Partner with leadership on roadmap and technical strategy
Develop internal tools that enable data-driven decision making
Create data processing and analysis capabilities
Build APIs and services that power internal applications
Support product team needs with custom data solutions
Collaborate with the Data Quality Automation Engineer on validation strategies
Share knowledge about data extraction patterns and architecture decisions
Help shape team culture and development practices
Mentor future team members as the team grows

PHP Expertise & Data Engineering
Strong PHP development experience (5+ years) with modern PHP practices
Deep understanding of data structures, relationships, and transformations
Experience building data extraction or ETL systems
Experience parsing and processing PDFs programmatically
Strong SQL skills (PostgreSQL and MySQL) for complex data queries
Understanding of data pipeline architecture and processing patterns
5+ years of professional PHP development with demonstrated experience in data extraction, ETL, or data pipeline work
Communicate proactively and clearly in writing
Self-manage and stay productive without direct oversight
Collaborate effectively across time zones
Build relationships and contribute to culture remotely
Take ownership and drive projects to completion independently
Hands-on experience with Claude CLI, Cursor, or similar agentic development tools
You've used AI to enhance your development workflow—including agents and instruction files
Understanding of prompt engineering and when/how to leverage LLMs effectively
Comfortable learning and adopting new AI tools quickly
You see AI as a productivity multiplier, not just a chatbot
Preferred
Experience with HL7 data standards (HL7v2, HL7 FHIR, or similar healthcare formats)
Understanding of healthcare data challenges (PHI, compliance, data quality)
Familiarity with medical device data or remote patient monitoring is a strong plus
Python experience (pandas, data analysis, basic ML) is a significant plus
Data analysis and exploration tasks
Building proof-of-concept ML features before we hire dedicated ML engineers
Flexibility in tool selection when PHP isn't the best fit
JavaScript for full-stack capabilities
Cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP)
Docker and containerization
Redis or other caching systems
Experience with medical device data formats
