Seasonal Ecology Research Field/Lab Tech
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is a global leader in higher education, and they are seeking a Seasonal Ecology Research Field/Lab Technician to assist with research on plant disease ecology. The technician will work on a grant-funded project examining seasonal epidemics of infectious diseases, conducting vegetation surveys, managing data, and performing laboratory tasks related to fungal pathogens.
Responsibilities
Assist with research on plant disease ecology in field and lab settings
Conduct extensive vegetation surveys of foliar fungal pathogens
Manage data collected from surveys
Collect plant and fungal samples from the field
Culture and archive fungal pathogens from infected plant material
Work on greenhouse inoculation protocols
Extract DNA from cultured fungal samples
Assist other lab members with additional projects
Qualification
Required
Willingness and ability to work early mornings and outdoors daily in the summer is required
Familiarity with general research procedures
Capacity to communicate and work well with others as a team
Employees must be able to secure transportation to an off-campus field site (Duke Forest) on a daily basis
Ability to work at the on-campus lab when necessary
Preferred
Some course work in a relevant field, including ecology, biology, and environmental science
Experience conducting ecological research, especially in the field
Demonstrated experience working in outdoor conditions for extended periods of time
