General Surgery Program Director - Assistant/Associate Professor of Surgery

Responsibilities

Serves the Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (SHSU - COM) as Program Director of its General Surgery Residency
Responsible for the administration and operation of the general surgery residency program
Responsible for teaching; scholarly activity; resident recruitment, selection, promotion, disciplinary action; supervision and evaluation of residents; faculty development; and other required activities
Serve on various committees within the residency and sponsoring institution including but not limited to the Residency Advisory Committee, Program Evaluation Committee, Clinical Competency Committee, and Graduate Medical Education Committee
Actively supervise, precept and teach residents, medical students and other learners in the outpatient clinic and other settings
Ensure that accreditation standards are maintained
Prepare and maintain the educational goals and curriculum of the program
Prepare and deliver lectures; prepare statistical and narrative descriptions of the program for accreditation
Maintain interdisciplinary team relationships with specialties relevant to family medicine to ensure continued quality patient care and resident education
Develop formal affiliation agreements with participating sites; maintain a continuity outpatient practice; prepare evaluations for teaching staff, residents and other medical learners; prepare and implement required program policies

Required

DO or MD degree from a College of Osteopathic or Allopathic Medicine
Successful completion of residency
Current AOA or ABMS General Surgery board certification
Current unrestricted license to practice in Texas (or eligibility to obtain a medical license in Texas)
Expertise in General Surgery (preferably five years)
At least three years documented educational and/or administrative experience
Ongoing clinical activity
Previous leadership experience
Excellent clinical skills
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively in complex interdisciplinary and interprofessional settings
Ability to communicate and work with faculty, residents, medical students, outside stakeholders, physician preceptors and college administration
Excellent written and verbal communication
Ability to utilize technology at high level including Microsoft Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint
Must be able to utilize video conferencing technology such as Zoom or Teams
Demonstrates personal initiative and abilities to deal with a rapidly changing environment

Preferred

Primary care physicians with training and experience in osteopathic manipulative medicine
Two years' prior experience as a core faculty member
Ability to teach osteopathic manipulative medicine
