The University of Virginia is seeking undergraduate student workers for the Brown Science & Engineering Library. The Circulation Desk Assistant will perform various tasks related to circulation services for library patrons, including charging and discharging library materials and assisting with library inquiries.

Responsibilities

Charge, discharge and renew library materials for patrons
Help patrons identify books and other resources using the Library’s catalog, Virgo
Help patrons locate materials in the stacks and provide basic assistance with scanners, copy machines, and printers
Answer basic information, direction, circulation status, and library policy questions
Sort, deliver, and retrieve library materials within the building
Assist patrons with library request forms
Assist in opening or closing of library during the first or last shift (if assigned)
Assist in maintaining the appearance of the library, keeping it neat and orderly
Be able to work weekends and during exam week periods
Adhere to all library policies and procedures
Assist with general library duties as required
Special projects as assigned
If unable to work an assigned shift, must be able to find a substitute for that shift
Be available to work from date of hire through May 08, 2026 and/or beyond

Required

Current undergrad UVA student
Punctuality, attention to detail, and dependability
Comfortable with data entry and the use of standard office software programs
Strong attention to detail
Ability to learn the Library of Congress call number system
Ability to work independently
Proactive
Customer/visitor service experience
Willingness and ability to work a set schedule
Dependability and accuracy
Good interpersonal communication skills
Good public service attitude and like working with people
Ability to communicate verbally in a clear manner
Ability to read printed labels
Ability to push a full book cart and lift 15 pounds
Be available to work from date of hire through May 08, 2026 and/or beyond
Must be able to work at least two to three opening (8am-10am) or closing (12am-2am) shifts per week
