Professional Aide
Michigan State University College of Engineering is seeking seasonal field technicians to assist with research, monitoring, and inventory projects focused on rare reptile and amphibian species in Michigan. The role involves conducting field surveys, collecting data, and ensuring accurate documentation while working under varying conditions and schedules.

Responsibilities
Conduct field work in support of various MNFI research, monitoring, and inventory projects
Plan field activities
Conduct surveys
Ensure accurate data collection
Evaluate potential sampling sites
Conduct surveys for rare animal species
Handle, measure, and mark animals
Collect blood and/or tissue samples
Sample vegetation and habitat characteristics
Clean and maintain equipment
Process specimens
Enter and compile data in the field/office
Qualification
Required
Access to reliable transportation (mileage reimbursed at standard rate), travel to study sites throughout Michigan, ability to stay overnight in hotels or campgrounds for up to a week at a time, and work over some holidays and/or weekends will be required
Preferred
Experience conducting reptile and amphibian surveys including handling and marking live animals
Familiarity with Michigan and/or Midwestern ecosystems and common plants
Ability to navigate in the field via map, compass, and GPS
Comfortable using watercrafts (kayaks, canoes, small boats) if needed
Proficiency in use of technology (e.g., web research, Zoom, Qualtrics, Microsoft Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, ArcGIS, Survey123, FieldMaps, distance technology, etc.)
Strong work ethic, attention to detail, and willingness to learn
Ability to work independently and as part of a team in remote areas
Ability to adapt and problem solve
Proven ability in establishing and working with a network of constituents and community members across race, gender, national origin, gender identity, religion, age, height, weight, political beliefs, sexual orientation, marital status, family status, veteran status, socioeconomic class, disabilities, and other differences
Understanding of and ability to implement Civil Rights principles and compliance standards
Combination of education and specific, relevant experience may be considered in lieu of degree
Ability to lift and carry educational materials, equipment, etc. up to 25 lbs
Ability to demonstrate sensitivity, knowledge, and use of appropriate approaches, skills and techniques, which reflect an understanding and awareness of social, cultural and economic diversity of the target population served
Effective oral and written communication skills
Travel in local and surrounding communities and occasional long-distance travel are required as a regular part of this position
Transportation is the responsibility of the employee
Other skills and/or physical abilities required to perform duties of the position
