The Oregon Department of Justice seeks up to two full-time attorneys to join their Government Services team. The successful applicants will provide legal advice and training primarily within the Public Safety practice group, advising various state agencies on complex statutory and constitutional laws.

Responsibilities

Providing advice, guidance and trainings to the Oregon State Police, the Oregon Department of Corrections, as well as other state agencies

Developing deep subject matter expertise in Oregon policing and corrections

Litigating administrative hearings and assisting with rulemakings

Advising clients regarding the application of complex state and federal statutory and constitutional laws

Experience in public records and public meetings laws and subpoena responses

Providing effective staff trainings, and other work as assigned by management

Required

Active membership in good standing with the Oregon State Bar by the time of appointment

At least one year of experience advising or litigating on behalf of governments, or equivalent, in Oregon, or elsewhere

Strong drafting, research, and relational and communication skills with both clients and colleagues

Demonstrated ability to handle a full workload and communicate within a team collaboratively and effectively

Demonstrated ability to accurately and concisely summarize complex issues in plain language

Strong work ethic and a demonstrated commitment to public service

Willingness to travel within Oregon as needed and willingness to take client calls outside of normal working hours

Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and contributing to an inclusive working environment where diverse individual experiences and perspectives are valued and supported

Preferred

At least three years' of serving in a general counsel role to an Oregon government (and will provide samples of excellent written client advice or equivalent written legal analysis)

At least two years' advising, training, and working with policing or corrections clients

At least three years' experience drafting ordinances, statutes, rules, policies, and procedures (and will provide examples)

Experience litigating administrative hearing matters

A demonstrated talent to accurately and concisely summarize complex legal issues in plain language (and will provide samples)

At least two years' experience working with Oregon's public records law or with subpoena review and response

Benefits

Employees who are Public Employee Retirement System (PERS) participating members will have their base salary increased by 6.95% and pay a 6% employee contribution to PERS
