Electrical Engineering (Substation) Intern - Summer 2026
WSP is seeking a Full Time Electrical Engineering (Substation) Intern for Summer 2026 to work out of their Portland, OR or Lake Oswego, OR office. This internship offers hands-on experience with utility substation design projects, allowing interns to develop their technical and professional skills while working alongside experienced engineers.
Responsibilities
Support a variety of engineering tasks with the goal to develop technical, social, and ethical skills
Work under the guidance of experienced engineers on utility substation design projects
Assist with detailed design tasks for low to extra-high-voltage substations, including: one-line diagrams, control and relaying schematics, wiring diagrams, SCADA, communications, conduit and cable sizing/routing, substation layout
Perform design calculations per industry standards (IEEE, NEC, NESC, etc.)
Support senior engineers with QA/QC design checks
Assist design engineers with physical and protection/control design efforts for electric utility substations
Complete training on assigned tasks
Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures
Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs
Qualification
Required
Actively enrolled in an accredited Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Renewable Energy Engineering, or related, Undergraduate or Graduate program with an anticipated graduation date of September 2026 or later
Must be 18 or older
Demonstrated interest in consulting engineering and the electric utility industry, or related field, and have a strong desire to advance skills related to WSP's work and projects
Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience
Capable of taking direction from leadership, mentors, and managers to executive projects
Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools
Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies
Authorization to work in the United States at the start of the internship
Preferred
Successful completion of junior-level courses in power system analysis and/or power system protection
Prior internship and/or related engineering experience is a plus
Students who have passed or are scheduled to take the Fundamentals of Engineering exam will be strongly considered for this position
Familiarity with design, drafting or engineering software such as MATHCAD, SOLIDWORKS, AUTOCAD, etc. as well as Microsoft Excel is beneficial
