District Attorney Legal Assistant (Legal Support & Investigations Specialist)
The State of North Carolina is seeking a highly motivated Legal Assistant to support the District Attorneys' Conference. This role involves case intake, investigative support, and coordination with law enforcement and victims of crime, contributing to the administration of justice across the state.

Responsibilities
Intake conflict and special prosecution cases referred to the Conference
Establish, organize, and maintain case files with a high level of accuracy and confidentiality
Assist prosecutors with case preparation, document management, and trial support as needed
Draft correspondence, summaries, and reports related to investigative and legal matters
Serve as a liaison between the Conference and local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies
Review and analyze investigative materials, including law enforcement reports, digital evidence, and related records
Utilize investigative databases and tools, including CLEAR and similar platforms, to locate witnesses and gather relevant information
Support investigative needs in conflict and special prosecution matters in coordination with assigned prosecutors
Develop and maintain expertise in Axon Justice and other discovery and investigative platforms
Assist with discovery intake, organization, and management for Conference-handled cases
Work collaboratively with prosecutors and law enforcement to ensure efficient, accurate, and secure handling of discovery materials
Stay current on evolving technology, discovery practices, and investigative tools relevant to prosecution work
Serve as a point of contact for victims and witnesses involved in Conference-handled cases
Provide clear information, guidance, and support to help victims understand the process and feel prepared
Coordinate with prosecutors and community partners to connect victims with appropriate resources
Approach all interactions with professionalism, empathy, and trauma-informed awareness
Assist with or support training efforts for law enforcement and other stakeholders related to investigations, discovery, and case preparation
Contribute to the development of best practices, training materials, and internal processes
Participate as a collaborative team member in building and refining this role and the program it supports
Qualification
Required
Graduation from high school, or an equivalency certificate, and two years of legal/secretarial experience
Knowledge of court system and procedures; legal terminology; and community resources to refer victims and witnesses
Skill in Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint; accurately typing 35-40 wpm; and answering a multi-line telephone system
Ability to interview to elicit information from victims and witnesses to assure appropriate services
Ability to coordinate and schedule the daily operations of the victim and witness program
Ability to manage the court appearances of victims and witnesses to ensure their presence in the courtroom when needed
Ability to communicate orally and in writing with persons of diverse backgrounds
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with law enforcement officers, officials of related agencies and the general public
Ability to calmly handle stressful situations
Knowledge of criminal investigations, evidence handling, and prosecution support
Knowledge of court systems, legal terminology, and criminal procedure
Knowledge of discovery platforms and investigative databases (including Axon Justice and CLEAR)
Skill in organizing complex information and managing multiple priorities
Skill in clear, professional written and verbal communication
Skill in building effective working relationships with prosecutors, law enforcement, and community partners
Skill in utilizing technology and adapting to new systems and tools
Ability to work independently while also thriving as part of a collaborative team
Ability to maintain professionalism and composure in high-pressure or emotionally charged situations
Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and integrity
Ability to contribute positively to a supportive, mission-focused work environment
Preferred
Law enforcement experience strongly preferred
Experience working with prosecutors, investigative units, or criminal justice agencies
