Family Law Examiner

NEOGOV is seeking a Family Law Examiner for the Marin County Superior Court. The role involves reviewing and analyzing family law cases to ensure compliance with legal standards and advising attorneys on filing requirements.

Responsibilities

Reviews all law and motion cases prior to hearing; reviews proposed judgments to ensure that documentation is procedurally correct and in compliance with appropriate laws, statutes and local rules; notes deficiencies, including incomplete, unclear and missing documents; contacts attorneys and others as necessary to correct defects
Conducts appropriate legal research; completes written documentation summarizing legal factors and any issues for each matter before the court, and meets with Family Law judicial officers to discuss prior to scheduled hearing; may prepare draft of tentative ruling
Reviews the calendar with the judge handling family law issues; provides information, discusses issues and makes recommendations regarding complex, contested or otherwise difficult cases
Contacts attorneys to resolve problems and issues, to inform them of calendar status and to answer questions regarding calendared matters
Analyzes financial documents; operates computerized child and/or spousal support programs to determine appropriate levels of financial support
Confers with family support staff, family court services staff and Court staff regarding assigned cases; provides information to attorneys and Court staff regarding the family law process and specific issues regarding cases in question
Confers with judicial officers to ensure that local family law rules are up do date and appropriate; recommends changes as necessary and maintains accurate records and files
Prepares a variety of summary documents, correspondence, reports and other written materials

Required

Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with a major in social work, social science, accounting or a field related to the work
Two years of responsible experience in legal analysis which included direct experience working with documents and procedures related to family law
A paralegal certificate may substitute for the work experience
Knowledge of legal and justice system terminology, forms, documents and procedures
Knowledge of court procedures
Knowledge of laws, regulations and procedures related to family law functions
Knowledge of legal research methodology
Knowledge of computer applications related to the work
Knowledge of basic business accounting sufficient to review and analyze child and spousal support matters
Knowledge of work planning and organization
Knowledge of clerical and standard office procedures and practices
Knowledge of record keeping principles and practices
Knowledge of correct business English, including spelling, grammar and punctuation
Knowledge of the operation of standard office equipment
Skill in operating a computer and related child support software
Skill in accurately retrieving data in a timely manner
Skill in driving a motor vehicle
Ability to conduct legal research
Ability to review legal documents related to family law and apply legal and procedural guidelines to determine accuracy and sufficiency
Ability to provide information to attorneys, unrepresented parties and the public regarding family law procedures and requirements
Ability to monitor changes in laws and regulations and recommend operational modifications as required
Ability to use sound independent judgment in following and applying appropriate laws, regulations, policies and procedures
Ability to understand and analyze complex financial documents
Ability to maintain accurate records and files
Ability to organize and prioritize own work in order to meet critical deadlines
Ability to prepare clear, accurate and succinct reports
Ability to communicate orally and in written form in a clear and concise manner
Ability to maintain confidential information when required by legal or ethical standards
Ability to deal successfully with people in stressful situations
Ability to deal tactfully, effectively and courteously with attorneys, the public and co-workers
Ability to represent the Court in a professional manner and establish and maintain effective work relationships with judicial officers, court personnel, governmental agencies and members of the public
