Natural Resources Engineer I or II
The State of South Dakota's Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR) is seeking a motivated Engineer I or II to join its Water Rights Program. This role involves conducting technical reviews of water use applications, inspecting water systems, and managing the state's observation well network to ensure the sustainable management of South Dakota's water resources.

Responsibilities
Conduct technical reviews of water use applications to ensure availability and prevent impairment of existing uses
Inspect water systems and dams for safety and compliance
Participate in lake level surveys
Assist in managing the state's observation well network
Investigate complaints and resolve disputes
License well drillers and ensure adherence to construction standards
Testify before the Water Management Board and make recommendations on water permit approvals
Utilize GIS and Microsoft Office tools for analysis and documentation
Provide customer service and technical assistance on water rights issues
Qualification
Required
Ability to obtain a valid South Dakota drivers license is required
Only applicants that possess a bachelor's or master's degree in environmental, civil, geological, or related engineering field will be considered
Strong problem-solving, analytical, and interpersonal skills
Desire for continual learning
Good interpersonal skills
Clear and effective communication abilities—both verbal and written
Strong decision-making skills, grounded in established engineering guidelines
Ability to collaborate with a team of engineers to protect and manage the state's water resources
Successful applicant is expected to routinely communicate and coordinate with other engineers, other agencies, and the public
Preferred
Preference will be given to candidates who have passed the Engineer-In-Training (EIT) exam or are eligible to obtain licensure
The ideal candidate will possess a solid understanding of environmental, geological, or civil engineering principles
Familiarity with investigative procedures and proficiency in tools such as Microsoft Office and GIS software
