Responsibilities

Provide advising and support to students affiliated with the Office of Black Student Success (OBSS) through individual and group meetings, activities, and events. Utilize foundational interviewing and counseling techniques to support student growth and development
Promote student retention by assessing student needs and connecting them with relevant CSUSB resources, including financial aid, scholarships, academic advising, Career Services, internships, Basic Needs, research opportunities, Health Services, CAPS, and community services
Encourage student engagement by recommending programs, services, and activities that align with academic and personal development goals
Serve as a liaison and maintain collaborative relationships with students, faculty, and on- and off-campus partners to support OBSS initiatives
Collaborate with Recruitment and Admissions to deliver presentations to K–12 students and families, with the goal of increasing Black student enrollment and engagement
Work with the Director to strengthen peer mentoring for Black students and support the development of a faculty-student mentoring program, including design, outreach, pairing, and ongoing support
Utilize institutional platforms such as the African American Data Dashboard and EAB to identify and assist students who may benefit from additional support services
Collaborate with campus partners to ensure accurate and consistent sharing of academic progress for OBSS-affiliated students
Represent OBSS at campus and community meetings, trainings, and events to strengthen program impact
Support the Director in planning and executing OBSS events, including workshops, educational sessions, and philanthropic activities
Assist with data collection, report preparation, and program assessments
Provide lead work direction, training, and guidance to Student Assistants, Peer Mentors, part-time staff, and volunteers; contribute to performance evaluations as appropriate
Attend conferences and professional development trainings, as required
Participate in OBSS-related events such as orientations, cultural programs, and academic advising trainings
Engage in Division of Student Affairs (DSA) activities, meetings, and trainings, as requested
Maintain student records in compliance with FERPA, U.S. Department of Education regulations, and university policies
Perform other classification-related duties as assigned to support the operations of the Division of Student Affairs (DSA), as directed by the OBSS Director and division leadership

Required

Possession of knowledge and abilities typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two (2) years of professional experience in a student services program area or related field
Equivalent to graduation from a four (4) year college or university in behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or other job-related field
Working knowledge of the practices, procedures and activities of the program to which assigned
General knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management
General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior
Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements
Obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews; reason logically; collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data; advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required
Recognize multicultural, multisexed and multi‑aged value systems and work accordingly
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts; and, rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions and programs of the campus to which assigned
Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas Services Office

Preferred

Master's degree in a related field
Experience working with the target population and in higher education settings
Knowledge of academic advising standards (e.g., CAS) and relevant policies/procedures
Familiarity with PeopleSoft and Microsoft Office
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and solve problems independently or in teams
Skilled in interpreting and applying complex policies; detail-oriented and adaptable
Proven ability to maintain confidentiality and work with diverse populations
Creative, innovative, and student-centered with strong interpersonal and advocacy skills
Ability to follow and interpret written, verbal, and diagrammatic instructions
