Responsibilities
Lead and Develop a High-Performing Team: Manage, mentor, and support Sensor Intelligence Engineers focused on embedded ML, providing regular feedback, coaching, and clear growth paths
Own Edge-Deployed Algorithms: Oversee the design, implementation, and maintenance of machine learning algorithms running on WHOOP’s wearable platform, ensuring they perform reliably on resource-constrained devices
Collaborate with Cross-Functional Partners: Work closely with Data Science, WHOOP Labs, Firmware, Software, and Product to define requirements, integration points, and success metrics for edge-deployed algorithms
Optimize for Performance and Power: Lead the team in balancing accuracy, latency, memory usage, and power consumption, including the use of techniques such as model compression, quantization, and efficient architectures
Champion Engineering Rigor: Establish and uphold best practices for testing, code quality, documentation, and observability for algorithms deployed on embedded platforms
Contribute to Technical Strategy: Help define the roadmap and long-term strategy for edge AI at WHOOP, including platform capabilities, tooling, and approaches for safely updating models in the field
Support Recruiting and Org Building: Partner with recruiting to attract and hire top embedded ML talent, and help shape the culture and operating model of the Sensor Intelligence Group
Qualification
Required
Proven experience as a technical leader managing multiple teams or a growing engineering organization
Experience growing high level individual contributor career growth at the staff level or higher
5+ years of industry experience in signal processing, machine learning, embedded systems, or a closely related field, including 2+ years in a people management or technical lead role with mentorship responsibilities
Strong programming proficiency in C and/or C++, with additional experience in Python or similar languages for prototyping and model development
Hands-on experience developing and optimizing machine learning models or algorithms for embedded, including deployment on devices with limited compute, memory, and power budgets
Proven ability to lead projects end-to-end, collaborating with cross-functional partners and balancing technical tradeoffs against product and business needs
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a track record of conveying complex technical topics to diverse audiences and aligning stakeholders around decisions
Passion for building high-performing teams, fostering growth, and creating systems that scale to power WHOOP's mission
