Applications Programmer

Responsibilities
Under direct supervision, applies professional programming concepts and established UCSF policies to assigned tasks within the Shan Lab
Works on well-defined projects of limited scope, with a focus on developing software that applies AI to medicine in areas such as disease classification, clinical decision support, early disease detection, and telemedicine to expand health access
Implements standard coding practices and troubleshoots routine technical issues
Follows established procedures to support system integration, data workflows, and software functionality for clinical and research applications, with guidance provided for more complex problems
The Application Programmer will contribute to the Shan Lab’s research and clinical initiatives by developing desktop, web, and mobile applications that apply modern software engineering and machine learning to advance the usability of medical AI tools
Working under direct supervision, the programmer will take on small projects or components of larger initiatives, focusing on building secure, compliant, and scalable software to manage sensitive medical data
Responsibilities include designing, developing, testing, and maintaining applications that integrate with a variety of research tools, clinical systems, and lab-built platforms
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in related area and minimum one year of experience or equivalent experience/training
Proficient in 1 each of database (e.g. SQL or R) and programming languages (e.g. Python, C++, JavaScript)
Experience with deep learning models
Knowledge relating to the design development, modification and implementation of software including object-oriented programming concepts
Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills
Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization
Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines
Preferred
Experience with database management, query, mining and reporting software
Proficient in statistical (e.g. SAS or STAT) languages
Experience contributing to scientific writing and presentations
