Traffic Design Engineer

Civil Engineering
Responsibilities
Assist with multidisciplinary traffic and safety studies, including Road Safety Audits (RSAs), Intersection Control Evaluations (ICE), corridor safety reviews, and site-specific safety assessments
Perform crash data analysis, including identification of crash patterns, contributing factors, and systemic risk conditions
Support the use of AI-based near-miss and conflict analytics, drone imagery, video review tools, or other digital technologies (training provided)
Assist with evaluation and recommendation of FHWA Proven Safety Countermeasures and Safe System Approach solutions
Assist with traffic operational reviews (speed data, pedestrian/bicycle counts, sight distance checks, lighting evaluations, etc.)
Analyze survey reports, maps, as-builts, aerial imagery, and safety datasets to develop feasible design or countermeasure recommendations
Perform design computations for signing & pavement markings, traffic control plans, geometric improvements, pedestrian/bicycle facilities, and minor roadway design
Assist in designing safety and traffic improvement concepts consistent with FDOT, county, and national guidelines
Assist with developing quantities and cost estimates related to safety countermeasures and minor traffic design improvements
Assist in the preparation of engineering documents, exhibits, and technical memoranda for safety studies, traffic and safety design recommendations, and construction documents
Participate in field reviews to collect safety observations, verify site constraints, and document conditions
Qualification
Required
Proficient in discipline-specific software such as AutoCAD, OpenRoads, and GIS tools
Proficient in Microsoft Office; ability to prepare clear tables, charts, and technical summaries
Strong written and oral communication skills for preparing traffic studies and safety reports and presenting findings
Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or related field from an ABET-accredited program
0–5 years of experience in civil engineering, transportation/traffic engineering, or roadway safety
Preferred
Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification
Coursework, internship, or project experience involving traffic engineering, transportation safety, roadway design, or crash analysis
Experience with FDOT, county transportation departments, or related safety programs
Familiarity with any of the following (training provided):
Crash analysis tools (e.g., Signal 4, Numetric, CARTS, SAFETY software)
GIS mapping (ArcGIS Pro, QGIS)
Traffic analysis or modeling tools
Exposure to RSAs, ICEs, speed studies, TEM, MUTS, or multimodal safety reviews
