Deputy Director of Integrated Waste Management
The City of San José is seeking an experienced and forward-thinking Deputy Director of Integrated Waste Management to lead the City’s comprehensive waste reduction, recycling, and resource recovery programs within the Environmental Services Department. This key executive role oversees residential and commercial solid waste systems, manages an operating budget of approximately $270 million, and plays a critical role in implementing the City’s Zero Waste Element.
Responsibilities
Lead the City’s comprehensive waste reduction, recycling, and resource recovery programs within the Environmental Services Department
Oversee residential and commercial solid waste systems
Manage long-term hauler contracts
Ensure program performance
Enforce regulations
Manage an operating budget of approximately $270 million
Oversee a division of more than 40 employees, including senior managers and technical specialists
Implement the City’s Zero Waste Element
Advance innovation in waste diversion
Ensure efficient delivery of essential waste management services
Qualification
Required
Experience in leading comprehensive waste reduction, recycling, and resource recovery programs
Ability to oversee residential and commercial solid waste systems
Experience managing long-term hauler contracts
Proven track record in program performance and enforcement
Experience managing an operating budget of approximately $270 million
Experience managing a division of more than 40 employees
Experience with residential, commercial, and construction and demolition debris programs
Knowledge of regulations and enforcement related to waste management
Ability to implement the City's Zero Waste Element
Experience in advancing innovation in waste diversion
Ability to ensure efficient delivery of essential waste management services
Strong leadership skills with a focus on strategic, collaborative, and operational excellence
Ability to manage complex hauler relationships
Experience in high-impact environmental programs
