Responsibilities
Plan and supervise the nursing care administered to meet patient care needs in surgery
Provide physicians with optimal services
Deliver perioperative care to surgical patients through the nursing process of assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation
Communicate with medical staff, other departments, and outside agencies while maintaining confidentiality
Continuously assess patients, plans patient care, provides direct and indirect patient care
Anticipate hemodynamic changes in the patient
Instruct patient and/or family members on patient care
Administer medications, blood, blood products, moderate sedation, assists with anesthesia
Prepare patients for surgery, clipping, prepping, positioning them, etc
Assist with set up and maintains the sterile field utilizing proper sterile technique opening & setting up
Circulate surgical and endoscopy cases and assists as needed in pre-op/post-op care
Understand basic EKG’s and cardiac monitors
Participate in Universal Protocol, verifying patient, procedure, and site
Administer treatments, wound care, and dressings
Clean, maintain, or schedule for maintenance, surgical suite and recovery equipment, and associated equipment such as autoclaves, electrocautery units, tourniquets, positioning equipment
Report equipment and supplies needs to the Charge Nurse and Director of Surgical Services
Report needed maintenance/hazardous conditions to Charge Nurse, Director of Surgical Services, and Maintenance and make an entry into the maintenance log
Ensure departmental adherence to proper infection control, OSHA, and safety standards
Coordinate and participate in continuing education
Maintain organizational facilities in accordance with TJC, federal and state, organizational and departmental policies and procedures
Maintain stock and expiration dates in central processing
Post cases, putting necessary information in posting book and computer, notify anesthesia of cases
Handle and prepare specimens correctly
Give complete report when relinquishing care to another area
Assist with setting up sterile trays and packages for autoclaving, keeping accurate records of autoclave usage and recommended biological testing
Assist with setting up Steris machine, keeping accurate records of Steris usage and weekly biological testing
Other duties as assigned or necessary
Qualification
Required
Education level equivalent to completion high school, and a graduate of an accredited registered nursing program
A degree in nursing from an accredited program
Must have and maintain an unencumbered State of Georgia RN license
BLS, ACLS, and PALS required
ACLS/PALS required within 90 days of date of hire
Six months to one-year related experience and/or training in an OR setting; or equivalent combination of education and experience
