Senior Accountant

The Center for Employment Opportunities (CEO) provides employment services to people recently released from incarceration. The Senior Accountant serves as a key member of the Finance team, providing advanced accounting expertise and ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of the organization’s financial data.

Responsibilities

Oversee day-to-day management of the general ledger, ensuring completeness, accuracy, and adherence to GAAP and organizational policies
Prepare and review monthly balance sheet account reconciliations—including bank accounts, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, petty cash, and payroll-related accounts—to ensure timely resolution of discrepancies
Prepare and post journal entries, including allocations for insurance, fringe benefits, and other cost distributions in accordance with approved cost allocation plans
Maintain and update the deferred rent schedule, preparing and submitting monthly entries for review and posting
Assist in preparing monthly and quarterly financial statements and supporting schedules
Support the preparation of Form 990 documentation, audit schedules, and analyses to facilitate timely and accurate completion of annual external audits and governmental/funder reviews
Provide analytical insights on account variances and recommend corrective actions where needed
Manage the fixed asset subledger, ensuring accuracy and compliance with capitalization policies
Review repairs and maintenance expenditures for potential capitalization and ensure appropriate accounting treatment
Prepare and record monthly depreciation entries
Conduct annual fixed asset reviews to identify assets no longer in service and recommend adjustments for disposal or revised useful life
Participate in process improvement initiatives to optimize financial systems, workflows, and reporting accuracy
Collaborate with cross-departmental teams to enhance financial transparency and accountability
Perform ad-hoc analyses and special projects as assigned by the Assistant Controller

Required

At least 4+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 2+ years in a nonprofit environment
Proficient in Microsoft Excel (including pivot tables and advanced formulas)
Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit fund accounting principles
Experience preparing reconciliations, journal entries, and supporting audit processes
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex financial information for non-financial stakeholders
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and maintain confidentiality
Takes ownership of outcomes and ensures the accuracy of assigned work
Adheres to internal structures and ensures all work products are complete, accurate, and properly documented
Demonstrates fairness, patience, and efficiency in supporting team members and stakeholders
Builds trust and cooperative relationships across departments and with external partners
Meets deadlines and maintains effectiveness under pressure
Delivers precise and reliable financial outputs
Prioritizes and completes work within established deadlines for period-end close
Maintains structured documentation and efficient workflows
Applies logical and data-driven approaches to resolve issues and improve accounting practices

Preferred

Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance preferred
Familiarity with cost allocation, fund accounting, and grant compliance strongly preferred
