Staff Power Electronics Systems Integration and Modeling Engineer

The Staff Power Electronics Systems Integration and Modeling Engineer will develop, integrate, and validate system and component control approaches for next-generation energy products, while collaborating with a multi-disciplinary team to drive innovative solutions in the distributed energy space.

Responsibilities
Develop and validate detailed PSCAD electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation models that integrate power electronics systems, power systems, and control systems
Perform advanced modeling and analysis using PSCAD and other related modeling tools to support design, integration, and performance evaluation
Implement custom control logic and custom-defined models using C within EMT/PSCAD models
Develop specifications and integration designs for external control interfaces, sensing, electrical protection, and power system integration of power electronics products
Apply simulation, hardware-in-the-loop testing, and hardware testing to ensure models, controls, and interfaces are accurate and meet performance requirements
Documentation of system and component requirements, models, and control approaches
Participate in hands-on bring up of energy system hardware components (relays, power meters, power converters, power supplies, communications devices, etc.) and system electrical assemblies
Work with a multi-disciplinary team to test and troubleshoot prototype designs
Mentor junior staff
Qualification
Required
BS/MS/PhD Electrical Engineering or closely related discipline with modeling, control system engineering, and energy system experience
Minimum experience for a Senior Engineer: BS and 5+ years of relevant experience / MS and 3+ years / PhD
Minimum experience for a Staff Engineer: BS and 8+ years relevant experience / MS and 6+ years / PhD and 3+ years
Strong experience developing dynamical models for power electronics systems, generators, power systems, and/or HVDC systems and performing EMT simulations for stability, fault analysis, and protection coordination
Proficiency developing, analyzing, and applying control and optimization approaches (e.g., phased-lock loops, closed-loop control systems, droop control, filtering and estimation, system identification, etc.) to energy systems
Ability to understand and develop component and systems models and control algorithms in C/C++
Familiarity with grid codes, renewable integration, and inverter-based resources
Ability to troubleshoot complex systems and drive solutions
Ability to take ownership of development tasks and drive them to completion in a timely manner and with high quality to support team success
Preferred
Modeling/Simulation experience in MATLAB/Simulink
Hands-on experience testing electrical and electromechanical system assemblies
Familiarity with HIL simulation-based validation
Proficiency with lab equipment including power meters, electronic loads, power supplies, oscilloscopes, etc
Familiarity with power system integration codes and standards such as UL 1741 and IEEE 1547
