Financial Audit Intern—Local Government Audit, Mideast—Summer 2026

The Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury is offering a 10-week paid educational internship for undergraduate students interested in local government auditing. Interns will participate in audit operations, receive training, and develop skills while working on active audits in the Mideast Tennessee Region.

Responsibilities

Learning to examine and review records, reports, financial statements, and management practices for local government entities and other organizations receiving public funds
Evaluating fairness of financial statement presentation
Assessing the adequacy of internal controls
Analyzing the efficiency and effectiveness of an entity's operations and systems
Ensuring compliance with laws, regulations, contracts, and grant agreements

Required

Applicants should have successfully completed at least 6 credit hours of accounting coursework
Students who are rising juniors, seniors, or enrolled in graduate accounting programs
Successful interns are those who are adaptable, able to think critically, work well both individually and as part of a team, and are willing to learn and grow
Candidates should exhibit strong interpersonal, verbal communication, organizational, and writing skills
This position requires a criminal background check

Preferred

Preference will be given to students who have completed intermediate or advanced accounting classes

Benefits

Travel is required for Local Government Audit Interns but is generally confined to same-day commutes to and from a job site.
Overnight stays are required for intern events, typically 3 per summer.
Overnight hotel stay(s) and related expenses are reimbursed.
