Lighting Designer - Mid-Level (3-7 years' experience)
Marras Curtis Lighting Design (MCLD) is a boutique, full-service lighting design firm specializing in residential and selective commercial projects where thoughtful design and technical precision matter. In this role, you will develop lighting design concepts, produce CAD drafts, and manage construction administration while ensuring quality and maintaining client relationships.
Architecture & Planning
Responsibilities
Develop lighting design concepts in conjunction with principal designer for multiple projects simultaneously across mainly New York and Miami regions, travel required
Produce CAD drafts, oversee and delegate to CAD department to develop specifications, fixture schedules, and photometric analyses
Review and coordinate lighting zones, wiring diagrams, lighting controls, and ceiling conflicts with MEP consultants
Design custom lighting fixtures and installation details for one-of-a-kind pieces
Manage construction administration with site teams and all subs, including order management, delivery schedules, handle RFI responses, perform on-site installation inspections, commissioning (final scene verifications, aiming, and light level adjustments), and punch list creation
Support cost estimating, fixture budgeting, and vendor coordination
Ensure accuracy and quality across all project documentation
Maintain positive working relationships with clients and their design and installation teams
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree or master's degree in Lighting Design, Architecture, Interior Design, or a closely related field
Proficiency in either AutoCAD, Vectorworks, Revit, or Archicad
Experience with photometric software (DIALux or AGi32)
Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel and Outlook)
Knowledge of electrical and safety codes, and familiarity with IES recommendations
Construction administration and project coordination experience
Strong, professional communication and collaboration skills
Organized, dependable, and proactive
Ability to work independently while supporting a team
Curiosity and drive to learn
Effective time management
Client-facing experience
Regular site visits within NYC and the surrounding region, plus overnight travel (1 night), generally during the standard work week
Primarily desk-based work at the office with periodic hands-on tasks (mockups, sample handling, material organization, basic tool use)
Construction sites and most residences are not ADA compliant; safe navigation of ladders and unfinished spaces, plus the ability to perform light lifting is required
