The NYS Department of Transportation is responsible for overseeing transportation infrastructure in New York. They are seeking an Engineer Trainee/Assistant Engineer to manage various highway programs, oversee facility records, and interact with the public regarding transportation-related issues.

Responsibilities

Highway Work Permits – including correspondence with various departments and the applicants, review of plans and specifications, inspections, project closeouts and general oversight of the program for the residency
Adopt – A – Highway Program – Managing the Residency’s AAH Program including meeting with groups to discuss safety and expectations, correspondence with current AAH groups, and permitting groups
Right of Way encroachments – Sending letters and talking with violators who have encroachments in the state right of way. Working with Main Office Legal as needed if the violation persists
Small Claims – Talking with the public, sending out claim forms and investigating issues as they arise
FOIL Requests – Lead the residency in responding to FOIL inquires
Facility Oversight/Asset Management – Oversee facility records as needed including PBS records, FOB/key records, Health Department Water Records, SPDES Monitoring, Septic and Oil/Water Separator Maintenance
Municipal Agreements – Salt and Arterial Maintenance agreement management. Shared Service agreements, both annual and project specific
Potential inspection of Residency led paving projects. May entail overtime
A significant amount of contact with the public is required
Operations- Plan and/or oversee maintenance crews when needed on a temporary basis
Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis
Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the Department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations

Required

Possession of a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State or the ability to meet the travel requirements of the position
Currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis
A bachelor's degree or higher in engineering or engineering technology as listed below, or proof of passing the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) AND one year of full-time engineering experience as listed below
Proof of passing the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) and a qualifying bachelor's degree or higher as listed below, or proof of passing the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) AND one year of full-time qualifying engineering experience as listed below
Your required educational credentials must have been awarded by an educational institution accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the United States (U.S.) Department of Education/Secretary of Education
If awarded by an institution outside of the U.S. and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency
One year of full-time engineering experience with transportation projects related to highways/roadways, railroads, bridges, airports, waterways, building structures, or traffic management and safety systems
