Director of Finance and Operations
Sherwood Forest is a year-round, not-for-profit, youth development agency in the St. Louis region providing extended residential camp experiences for children from economically disadvantaged families. The Director of Finance and Operations provides strategic and operational leadership across finance, human resources, information technology, and general operations, ensuring the financial health and sustainability of the organization.
Non-profit Organization Management
Responsibilities
Provide leadership and oversight for all financial operations, including budgeting, forecasting, accounting, auditing, cash flow management, and financial reporting
Lead long-term financial planning, capital projects, grant budgeting and reporting, and scenario modeling to support strategic decision-making
Ensure accurate, timely monthly financial reporting for staff and the Board; clearly communicate financial performance and trends
Develop, implement, and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls aligned with best practices
Oversee the organization’s investment policy in collaboration with the Board
Advise on and negotiate significant contracts; manage relationships with vendors, suppliers, and facility rental clients
Lead hiring, onboarding, performance management, and professional development processes
Oversee compensation, payroll, and benefits administration, ensuring competitiveness and fiscal responsibility
Maintain and regularly update the employee handbook and HR policies
Ensure compliance with all employment laws, accreditation standards, and HR-related regulations
Manage Workers’ Compensation and related audits
Support staff and leadership teams in goal-setting, prioritization, and day-to-day operations
Champion a culture of transparency, learning, accountability, and staff wellness
Oversee all organizational technology systems, including hardware, software, phone, and internet services
Ensure data security, system reliability, and appropriate upgrades and replacements
Train staff and oversee technology use, cybersecurity, and data protection best practices
Ensure appropriate insurance coverage, including property, liability, cyber, D&O, and other required policies
Develop, document, and ensure implementation of consistent agency-wide operational systems and procedures
Maintain robust internal controls to protect organizational assets
Oversee records management and compliance with document retention and destruction policies
Manage business office and operational functions, including administration, transportation, insurance, food service, healthcare, wellness, supplies, equipment, safety, security, and facilities support
Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, reporting requirements, and accreditation standards
Identify and implement innovative solutions to increase efficiency and organizational effectiveness
Partner with the Executive Director to execute the strategic plan, monitor performance, and manage organizational budgets
Help coordinate meeting preparation, financial reporting and governance compliance for Board meetings
Support organizational communications and events
Collaborate with leadership team to set organizational goals and track progress
Promote a trauma-informed, inclusive, equity-centered workplace culture rooted in compassion and accountability
Use staff feedback and data to drive continuous quality improvement and strengthen organizational culture
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, business administration, or related field
7–10+ years of progressively responsible leadership experience
Strong financial management and nonprofit accounting experience
Demonstrated experience leading HR, operations, and cross-functional teams
Knowledge of nonprofit governance, compliance, and Board relations
Preferred
CPA, MBA, or related advanced degree
Experience in mission-driven or human services organizations
Experience with accreditation and regulatory environments
