Responsibilities
Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems on City vehicles and equipment
Perform preventive maintenance, safety inspections, and emission testing
Operate shop machinery and tools, including lathes, presses, grinders, and welding equipment
Document repairs and maintain accurate service records
Manage parts inventory and coordinate with vendors for purchases
Assist with specialized fabrication and welding (Mechanic II)
Support emergency operations and snow/ice control when needed
Qualification
Required
0–2 years of automotive mechanical repair experience for Mechanic I
High School Diploma or equivalent; technical training preferred for Mechanic I
Ability to obtain a valid Class “B” CDL within 180 days for Mechanic I
Strong troubleshooting and repair skills for Mechanic I
2+ years of automotive mechanical repair experience for Mechanic II
ASE Certification, Emissions License Certification, and A/C 609 Certification for Mechanic II
Ability to meet DOT inspector qualifications for Mechanic II
Welding and fabrication experience for Mechanic II
Equivalent to an associate's degree in automotive repair or related field for Mechanic II
Knowledge of internal combustion and diesel engines
Ability to diagnose and repair complex mechanical and electrical systems
Proficiency with shop tools and equipment
Strong attention to detail and safety practices
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform manual labor
