Investigational Drug Service Technician

Responsibilities
Medication Distribution 1.1 Accurately and efficiently pick, prepare, package, label, and deliver medications to the appropriate storage area of patient care units, including, but not limited to: automated dispensing cabinets (ADC), medication storage refrigerator
1.2 Utilize appropriate product packaging (i.e. bag, vial, bottle, jar, syringe, oral syringe)
1.3 Demonstrate proficiency and timeliness in the fulfillment, sorting and delivery of medication orders relating to: stat orders, new orders, refills, stock outs, transfers, recalls
1.4 Ensure optimal medication storage to: minimize medication errors (avoid sound-alike/look-alike side-by-side storage), account for adequate par levels with a goal to minimize stock outs, while allowing appropriate drug turnover, maintain appropriate storage conditions (i.e. cleanliness, temperature), allow rotation of stock based on expiration dating
1.5 Demonstrate reliability in providing assistance to the pharmacist in regards to the provision of pharmaceutical care
1.6 Timely replenishment of medications intended for emergency trays (code carts/anesthesia/tackle box)
1.7 Appropriately handle and dispose of hazardous and non-hazardous waste
1.8 Maintain a clean, well-stocked work environment
1.9 Overall completion of the provision of pharmacy services within established timeframe
1.10 Identify and escalate concerns related to the provision of pharmacy care (i.e. medication distribution)
Medication Inventory Management 2.1 Maintain adequate medication inventory levels based upon par levels
2.2 Ensure proper medication movement through rotation of stock based on expiration and usage patterns
2.3 Remove expired medications or soon-to-be-expiring medications from inventory distribution (i.e. carousel, automated dispensing cabinets) as per departmental guidelines
2.4 Properly receive medications from wholesaler and replenish pharmacy stock accurately (i.e. automated medication carousel)
2.5 Consistent usage of handheld tablet with bar code scanning functionality (hospital specific)
Cross-Functional Proficiency a. Medication Distribution and Automation/Technology processes, Non-Sterile Oral Compounding Extemporaneous Oral/Topical Compounding, Packaging, IV Admixture/Sterile Products (hazardous handling and compounding)• Prepare chemotherapy/antineoplastic products with adherence to departmental safety guidelines, OSHA regulations, and/or industry standards
B. Demonstrate expertise/mentorship/project management in one of the following areas: Purchasing, Operating Room, Pediatrics, Investigational Drug Service, Narcotic Vault, Medication History, Oncology, Operations
C. Perform necessary mathematical calculations and drug product manipulation, dilution, or compounding to accurately prepare/label unit dose oral solids/liquids/injectables according to policy and regulatory standards
D. Prepare hazardous-category products with adherence to departmental safety guidelines, OSHA regulations, and/or industry standards
E. Appropriately document manufactured medications, controlled substance medication movement, packaged medications and investigational drugs as dictated by departmental policy/regulatory standards
F. Practice aseptic technique, infection control, and universal precautions as instructed for work area as observed by supervisor
Technical Expertise 4.1 Demonstrate proficiency and mastery of various technology utilized in the provision of pharmaceutical care, including, but not limited to: EMR, ADS, Inventory Management software, carousel, Packaging software, Sterile Product Pharmacy Workflow Manager, Barcode Labeling Programs, RFID Technology (usage varies depending upon hospital)
4.2 Demonstrate ability to independently troubleshoot various technology issues and assist in resolution
Communication Skills 5.1 Respond to Nursing, Provider, and Ancillary Staff inquiries via telephone, in-person, or electronically
5.2 Appropriately manage, triage and follow-up various inquiries, when appropriate, in a timely and professional manner to ensure accurate and safe medication/information delivery
5.3 Adhere to HIPAA guidelines in all forms of communication
5.4 Maintain appropriate record keeping in regards to all forms of compounding, packaging, and controlled substances medication distribution
5.5 Identify and communicate pharmacy and/or hospital related concerns, errors, improvements, or general operational observations to the pharmacist or management, as appropriate
5.6 Exercise a professional tone of communication, both verbal and non-verbal, to all staff, both within the department and house-wide
Leadership 6.1 Identify and participate in ongoing quality assurance (QA) to ensure operational efficiency for all aspects of Inpatient Pharmacy Services. (i.e. medication storage, sterile products, purchasing)
6.2 Serve as a point person for resolution of technical issues, including, but not limited to: electronic hardware and software. Escalate as necessary, but maintain a presence until satisfactory resolution of issue is observed
6.3 Be a standard-bearer for positive change
6.4 Mentor junior personnel
6.5 Participate in, provide formal feedback of, and support the training/ education of new staff and students. This includes, but is not limited to, pharmacists, technicians, residents, student pharmacists, student technicians and volunteers
6.6 Actively participate in departmental projects for the advancement of departmental goals
Qualification
Required
High school diploma or equivalent required
At least 1 year experience as a YNHHS Pharmacy Technician I, or at least 3 years of equivalent hospital experience for external candidates
Successfully maintain standards outlined in the YNHHS Technician Career ladder for respective technician grade (i.e. Tech II)
Current registration/licensure or eligible for registration (obtained prior to start date) as a Pharmacy Technician in the State of employment, as outlined by the respective State regulatory agencies
Active Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certification, or equivalent, is required on, or within 12 months of, date of hire
Maintain YNHHS Pharmacy Technician II Career Ladder requirements
Proficiency in mathematical calculations
Ability to effectively work with computer and technology equipment, including the ability to perform detailed troubleshooting related to said technology
Preferred
College degree desirable
Successful completion of an academic or military hospital pharmacy technician training course preferred
