Communication Studies Instructor (Full-Time, Tenure-Track) Madera Community College
SCCCD International Education is seeking a full-time, tenure-track Communication Studies Instructor at Madera Community College. The successful candidate will provide instruction in various communication courses, collaborate with faculty and staff, and engage in program development to support student success.
Higher Education
Responsibilities
Teaching introductory public speaking, interpersonal communication, argumentation, persuasion, group communication, and other courses offered by the department
Participating in appropriate professional meetings and workshops
Participating in program development and expansion of communication courses, including connections with industry and Career and Guided Pathways
Participating in curriculum development and program planning
Assisting in the establishment of extracurricular activities in the department
Serving on and attending department, college, and district committees as needed
Participating in program review, student learning outcome development and assessment to improve student learning
Teaching assignments in a variety of instructional settings and times, including evening and/or weekends, on-line or off-campus and large group instruction classes as needed
Otherwise fulfilling all of the duties and responsibilities of faculty as required by Administrative Regulation 7122
Other duties as assigned
Qualification
Required
Evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom
Master's in speech, speech broadcasting, telecommunications, rhetoric, communication, communication studies, speech communication or organizational communication; or
Bachelor's in any of the above and master's in drama/theater arts, mass communication or English; or
A valid California Community College Credential; or
The equivalent education and/or experience (requires an equivalency)
Preferred
Experience and skill incorporating elements of diversity, equity, and inclusion into all areas of responsibility
Recent experience working with African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes
Experience working with students of various cultural, gender, age, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds including students with disabilities
Willingness to examine and remediate one's instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students
Related work and professional experience
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students and staff
Demonstrated ability to work with computers, and other technologies, which are utilized in providing high-quality instruction and support to students
Experience in using innovative teaching methods, such as collaborative learning, active use of technology, and online/hybrid formats to encourage student engagement
Experience with curriculum and teaching introductory public speaking, interpersonal communication, argumentation, persuasion, group communication, and other courses offered by the communication studies program
Involvement in organizing and facilitating program, departmental, and/or college-wide events
Experience with the development of new courses and willingness to build a new program
Knowledge of current course-specific, discipline-specific, and program-specific (SLO's) assessment methods as well as other related materials, including program planning and accreditation processes within the communication discipline
Completed certification for online instruction
Experience leading forensic/debate teams
Knowledge of the community college and its mission and goals
