Skilled Trades Specialist II

The Maryland Department of General Services (DGS) supports State and local government agencies by providing facilities management services. The Skilled Trades Specialist II is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of essential state office buildings, ensuring that all building systems and equipment function properly.

Responsibilities

Operates HVAC, electrical, plumbing, other critical and safety components within design parameters of equipment
Identifies potential issues using handheld temperature, vibration and sonic sensing tools, and verify readings are properly uploaded into CMMS database. Accesses CMMS records to help with diagnosing and troubleshooting equipment malfunctions
Responds to requests for building repairs. Restores equipment to proper operation. Identifies the need for additional building trades support and communicate with the building manager for authorization to obtain assistance. Coordinates with contractors to perform work requiring outside expertise
Replaces filters, belts, hoses and other consumables. Inspects building components to identify potential issues and prevent emergency repairs. Tracks maintenance schedules and ensure work is done to industry standards
Performs other building maintenance work as assigned, which may include but not limited to; repair and replacement of fixtures, hardware, lighting, ceiling and floor coverings; operation and maintenance of motorized and electrical equipment and tools; grounds maintenance task such as clearing sidewalks and parking lots; containment of spills and leaks to prevent injury and damage

Required

Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate
Three years of experience performing skilled trade work in plumbing, carpentry, electrical, HVAC, locksmith, masonry, painting, or welding work
One (1) year of experience working with automated work order systems
Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland
Employees in this classification who perform electrical work and are assigned to facilities that mandate licensed electricians must possess a current license as a Master Electrician or other appropriate electrician license from a local board or from the Maryland State Board of Master Electricians
Employees in this classification who perform work as a plumber must possess a Maryland Journeyman/Gas Fitter License

Preferred

Skilled trades experience working in a commercial building setting
Professional training, union certification or completion of a certified/accredited training program in a skilled trade, apprenticeship program, or vocational school
