Responsibilities

Assist in inspection of contractor’s work and methods so that the construction work meets the requirements of the plans, specifications, and special provisions
Perform field testing of construction materials to ensure that tests are performed accurately, timely, thoroughly, and according to specification
Document and summarize all appropriate data necessary to pay contractors promptly and process final contract acceptance documents to ensure data integrity and compliance with government regulations
Assist the Materials Lab in performing various materials property tests on materials used for road and bridge construction, assist the Auger Crew with performing field investigation of place pavements and soils and/or assist Material Engineers with collecting and compiling data from various historical sources
Assist the Hydraulics Squad Leader in inspecting drainage features like pipes, ponds, and structures
Use TAMS (Transportation Management System) tools to update databases and ensure features are accurate
Recommend repairs to pipes in poor condition to avoid damage to our State Highways and unplanned detours
Assist the Right of Way staff with ordering titles, basic CADD drafting, map updating, filing papers, scanning documents, miscellaneous errands, and county GIS property records research
Assist the Permits staff with permits, leases, and reviewing the right of way for encroachments

Required

Must be 18 years old or older
Knowledge and application of advanced mathematics including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry
Knowledge of computer software used in testing and design work and ability to use windows based operating systems
Ability to understand technical documents and follow instructions
Candidates must be currently enrolled or enrolling within three months as a full-time student (six semester/9 quarter credits) in a post-secondary or graduate program with a GPA and maintain at least 2.0
Candidates with at least two (2) years of post-secondary education in the program area in which they are employed will qualify for the student worker paraprofessional senior classification
Valid Class D Driver's License required for construction and hydraulics positions. Positions in State Aid/Agreements, Right of Way, GIS/Planning, Traffic, Project Management, Materials positions do not require a Class D Driver's License, however, incumbent must be able to provide their own transportation for travel or possess a valid driver's license to drive for state business

Preferred

Candidates must be currently enrolled as a full-time student in Civil Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related program
Full-time student with a GPA of at least 3.0
