Nuclear Engineer - Subcritical Core Analyst

Subcritical Systems Inc. is a funded startup based in Austin, Texas dedicated to bringing the energy amplifier concept to the United States for safe generation of electrical power. They are seeking a Nuclear Engineer to lead the neutronics design of a subcritical core, optimizing performance through simulations and collaborating with scientists and engineers to achieve technical milestones.

Responsibilities

Serve as an integral member of the subcritical core team responsible for designing, prototyping, and ultimately constructing the subcritical core
Optimize the neutronics performance of the subcritical core through radiation transport and nuclide depletion simulations using state-of-the-art codes and tools
Calculate core criticality, reactivity coefficients, and fuel burnup; provide heating data to CFD analysts; estimate radiation damage in structural components; design and analyze radiation shielding
Work closely with accelerator scientists and CFD analysts to optimize the proton-beam-on-target parameters
Interact with scientific and technical collaborators and other external stakeholders across laboratories
Work with the leadership team on developing & tracking key company technical milestones, ensuring delivery of results within aggressive timelines in a complex, fast-paced environment
Document work in written reports, presentations, and regulatory submissions

Required

Demonstrated expertise performing radiation transport simulations of fission systems to calculate reactivity coefficients, heat loads, and radiation damage
Experience performing nuclide depletion simulations
Productive yet careful analyst whose results when shared can be trusted as correct
Strong work ethic, resilient, able to work in a fast-paced environment, driven, passionate about the field
Export control restrictions limit us to candidates who are U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents (green card holders)

Preferred

Ph.D. (preferred) or M.S. in nuclear engineering, or similar field
MCNP experience preferred
Experience using unstructured mesh geometries in MCNP and automated optimization algorithms (e.g., DAKOTA)
Experience in charged particle transport simulations and accelerator-driven subcritical core design
Experience analyzing fast-spectrum cores, in particular cores cooled by heavy liquid metal
Experience interacting with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission
Record of technical accomplishment through publications and presentations
