Parks Technician II
NEOGOV is seeking a Parks Technician II for the Ketchikan Gateway Borough. The role involves performing a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and operation of public spaces, leading maintenance personnel, and ensuring the upkeep of parks, fields, and facilities.

Responsibilities
Assist in developing, constructing and maintaining gardens, beautification assets, parks, fields, playgrounds, green-spaces and Borough facilities
Mow and maintain park and open space areas such as baseball and soccer fields; remove weeds; clean and maintain tennis courts and nets. Perform annual and routine daily preparatory maintenance for all games and events at Borough sports fields. Inspect, wash, and perform routine maintenance of park drinking fountains and restrooms. Wash, paint, and repair or replace park tables and slabs
Maintain the central greenhouse in its entirety, including ensuring operational availability, climate control, stocking, and cleaning
Lead warehousing for all materials required for gardening a beautification operations and purchase materials for ongoing operations
Operate vehicle-mounted snowplow, ice melt applicators, snow blowers, and ATV-mounted snowplow
Care for and maintain trees, including planting, pruning, and removal as necessary. Assist in the developing and maintaining tree inventory. Participate in Arbor Day activities as requested
Perform routine maintenance on lawn and power equipment. Maintain equipment and automobile maintenance logs
Maintain and adjust specialized turf care equipment and tools, including electric motors, pumps, sprinklers, tractors, and mowers
Use hand and power tools such as saws, drills, hammers, snow blowers, pumps, brush cutters, generators, compressors, mowers, chainsaws, grinders, wood chippers, and stump grinders, as needed
Assists Grounds Supervisor in the development of work schedules, maintenance planning and facility operations. Identifies periods of shift work and delegate to temporary and Parks Tech I staff as appropriate
Assign duties to Parks Tech I and temporary or volunteer personnel in maintenance activities, as assigned
Assist in setting up and taking down equipment for various park and recreation programs; prepare facilities for use
Assist in the construction of new parks facilities. Oversee the physical upkeep of parks, fields, playgrounds, and facilities in a safe and fiscally responsible manner
Assist Grounds Supervisor in chemical use and safety. Assist in the chemical safety/Right-to-Know program
Interact with contractors, vendors, sports league representatives, and the general public regularly
Provide instruction to other employees in all aspects of procedure and technique related to this job, unless such instruction requires specialized certification not held by the employee. Perform minor semi-skilled interior building maintenance such as painting, plumbing, carpentry, electrical, and other trade work
Operate forklifts, tractors, mowers, jack hammers, welders, trucks, steam cleaners, buffers, washers, and other equipment as needed
Perform custodial work such as assigned, including changing light bulbs, dumping garbage, replenishing supplies; sweeping; washing windows and walls; cleaning rain gutters; and collecting and disposing of solid waste
Install and maintain goal posts and nets for sports facilities, including soccer, volleyball, baseball, softball, tennis and basketball. Open and close, lock and unlock facilities as needed
Assist with interviews, hiring, training, and oversight of temporary employees in all tasks under the responsibility of the division
Condition and prepare soils; plant seeds, seedlings or bulbs in greenhouse or outdoor growing areas using hand tools and gardening equipment
Transplant plants from growing areas to display beds; place potted plants in beds or baskets according to work plans
Plant grass, flowers, trees, and shrubs; develop work plans for all Borough beautification assets including parks, baskets, and facilities
Fertilize, water, weed, or thin plants in greenhouse and growing areas
Trim and edge around walks, flower beds, and walls using edging tools
Prune shrubs and trees to shape and improve growth or remove damaged leaves, branches, or twigs, using shears, pruners or chain saws
Apply herbicides and insecticides as necessary using hand or automatic sprayer
Maintain lawns by watering, mowing, fertilizing, and monitoring plant health
Rake and bag leaves for composting and remove litter as necessary
Assist in the development and implementation of beautification plans and short-term goals
Promote beautification activities within the Borough including Arbor Day events, instructional classes, and radio programs
Perform other related duties as assigned by the Grounds Supervisor or other Public Works management
Qualification
Required
Knowledge of general parks, horticulture, gardening and public facility operations
Knowledge of departmental policies, safety procedures, and regulations
Must have a strong sense of teamwork, cooperation, and effective communication skills
Must have physical stamina and ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Knowledge of greenhouse operations and landscaping
Ability to coordinate activities, compile data, and process forms and information efficiently
Must possess or be able to obtain a valid State of Alaska driver's license with a driving record acceptable to Borough's insurance carrier
Must obtain a pesticide applicator license
High school diploma or equivalent
Preferred
Knowledge of sports field and playground maintenance
Recent experience with power/non-power tools, basic plumbing, and mechanics (vehicle and small engine preventative maintenance)
Two (2) years grounds and/or facility maintenance experience
Supervisory experience
A two-year degree in related field
Recent experience with plant materials, chemicals, production, and maintenance
Benefits
Paid Time Off (PTO) accrued at a rate of 176 hours or 22 days per year for the first two years and thereafter at higher levels set out in the Borough Code (KGBC 3.30.030).
Eleven paid holidays every year and two annual floating holidays.
