Sr. Associate Director, Writer, Advancement Communications

The Catholic University of America is seeking a Sr. Associate Director/Writer for Advancement Communications. This role is responsible for developing compelling content to strengthen engagement with donors, alumni, and the community while collaborating across teams to deliver high-quality narrative storytelling and persuasive messaging.

Responsibilities

Develops strategic collateral and messaging in collaboration with Advancement teams, Alumni Relations, Annual Giving, Stewardship, Events, schools, and other institutional partners, ensuring consistency with university brand and priorities
Assumes the lead editorial role in conceptualizing, researching, writing, and editing a wide variety of content generated by and on behalf of the division. Special emphasis is placed on feature articles (print, web), alumni events speech/script writing for university leadership, promotional materials and display ads, newsletters, brochures, direct mail appeals, invitations, presentation materials, press releases, donor correspondence, reports, video recording scripts, and other related outreach and engagement collateral
Edits and proofs diverse print and digital materials—including Advancement donor correspondence, emails, brochures, collateral, proposals, stewardship reports, event scripts, newsletters, and web features—ensuring alignment with university voice and style. May contribute to campaign-related materials such as case statements, proposals, and leadership communications
Performs research of source materials and Raiser’s Edge database to obtain and verify facts; analyzes sources for accuracy of information and most effective and engaging approach; interviews donors, faculty, students, and alumni. Maintains a high level of confidentiality
Manages writing projects from concept to completion—interviewing subjects, developing copy, editing, and adapting content across platforms. Produces materials that build positive relationships with donors, alumni, and other university stakeholders
Collaborates with Advancement communications staff to assist with overflow work and offers support and strategic counsel on digital communications (email, web content, mobile, social media, video scripts), gift proposals, case statements, and campaign collateral
Supports the Division of University Advancement in achieving its strategic and fundraising goals, as well as Campaign goals, through positive and productive interaction and collaboration with all departmental staff, University liaisons, and external constituents

Required

Bachelor's Degree required
at least five (5) years of professional writing experience
Excellent written communication skills are essential
An exceptionally strong and savvy writer and a relentless editor with understanding of the University brand and mission
Collaborative, creative, deadline-oriented, and customer service focused, with a keen eye for nuance and deep understanding of audience
A demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team, manage projects under deadline, build relationships and volunteer engagement, and maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality
Ability to work effectively with internal and external constituencies, including individuals of significant influence and affluence
Demonstrable experience writing for institutional leaders and adapting to her / his voice for written communications
Demonstrated proficiency with Google suite of applications, and the ability to produce professional documents and presentations
Exceptional attention to detail and proofreading ability, combined with strong interpersonal and written communication skills
Proven capacity to manage competing priorities, exercise sound judgment, and apply effective organizational practices in a fast-paced environment

Preferred

advancement or higher education experience
Familiarity with advancement systems such as Raiser's Edge and iModules
