Director of Intellectual Property

Responsibilities
Lead and oversee patent prosecution activities, including drafting, filing, and managing patent applications
Collaborate with R&D teams to identify patentable inventions and ensure robust protection
Deliver freedom-to-operate (FTO), patent validity, and infringement analysis to inform decision-making across research, development and commercial projects
Develop, implement, and oversee global IP strategy for Fortvita and Innovent research projects, ensuring alignment with business objectives
Monitor and manage the lifecycle of patents to optimize portfolio value
Negotiate, draft, and review licensing agreements, collaboration agreements, and other related commercial contracts
Work with internal stakeholders to ensure agreements align with Innovent IP and business strategies
Advise on IP ownership, rights, and obligations arising from agreements
Closely collaborate with other IP team members to develop process and guidance to manage IP risks
Conduct IP due diligence for in-license and out-license deals
Develop and enforce IP-related policies, processes, and compliance programs
Lead and manage IP disputes, including infringement litigation, oppositions, and other proceedings
Collaborate with external counsel to achieve favorable outcomes in disputes
Support pre-litigation risk assessments
Partner with R&D, legal, commercial, and regulatory teams to align IP protection with product development and market strategies
Support business development efforts, including drafting and negotiating IP-related terms in licensing and partnership agreements
Qualification
Required
J.D. and licensed to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction (active and in good standing)
USPTO registration and eligibility to practice patent law
Advanced scientific degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in life sciences, such as biology, chemistry, biochemistry, or a related field
At least 5 years of intellectual property law experience combined experience in top-tier law firms and in-house legal roles, with a focus on life sciences or biotechnology sectors
Proven track record in advising IP risks in deals, for example at least independently supported 2-3 deals (including in-license, out-license or collaboration)
Strong global perspective, with experience of managing patent portfolios across the U.S., EU, China and Japan
Experience of managing trademark support is a plus
Excellent organizational communication and coordination skills
Strategic and pragmatic thinker with hands-on execution ability in fast paced organization
Collaborative, agile and comfortable working cross-functionally in a diver culture
Entrepreneurial and creative mindset with flexibility to pivot quickly as business needs evolve
In depth knowledge of global drug research and development
Excellent written and oral communication skills — able to translate complex IP concepts for diverse stakeholders
Preferred
Proficiency or working knowledge of Chinese (Mandarin) is preferred
