Electron-Ion Collider Project Director

Responsibilities
Articulate the value proposition for EIC project
Develop strong stakeholder and community support for the EIC project
Ensure attainment of EIC project scope, schedule, and cost objectives in a safe, cost-effective manner and consistent with the BNL and the DOE needs and requirements
Represent the project in interactions with DOE leadership and other stakeholders
Serve as primary interface with DOE Office of Science and DOE EIC Project Office for review preparations, execution, and reporting including closure of action items
Coordinate public relations and community outreach functions with the BNL’s Office of Stakeholder Relations and External Affairs and other key internal and external stakeholders
Direct and supervise the Technical Director, EIC Project Manager, and senior staff to effectively execute the design, build, installation, and initial commissioning of the EIC
Execute the project’s baseline within the approved EIC Project cost and schedule baselines. Identify risks. Implement and manage effective risk mitigation plans
Effectively lead a project team
Manage the expectations of DOE Order 413.3B and communicate project status in a timely manner to BNL management and DOE
Develop and communicate project goals, processes, systems, and milestones
Request and coordinate internal and external peer reviews of the EIC Project
Track issues to closure
Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
Commit to BNL's Values by holding project team to the highest scientific, professional, and ethical standards in a manner that fosters mutual respect and enhances the reputation of the individual researcher, their colleagues, and the Brookhaven National Laboratory in its mission to address the Department of Energy's and the nation's scientific and technical challenges
Qualification
Required
Master's degree in science, engineering, or related field with at least 15 years of management or technical project experience in a scientific or R&D related organization
Experience at a major experimental research facility or an equivalent type of facility
Proven successful management of large complex scientific and technical projects
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of people having a wide range of technical and scientific backgrounds
Proven ability to promote teamwork and collaboration as well as generate innovative solutions to ordinary and extraordinary challenges
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Demonstrated record of supporting the professional development of staff
Preferred
PhD degree in a scientific or engineering discipline relevant to accelerator physics
Extensive prior experience in the design, fabrication and industrial procurement of complex technical hardware
Experience with execution of a DOE Order 413.3B project
Experience with DOE Office of Science and/or multi-party or international construction projects
Familiar with accelerator facilities
Experience successfully working within a user-facility environment
Certification in project management
