Responsibilities

Analyze samples for total coliform, fecal coliform, heterotrophic plate count, E. Coli bacteria, Enterococci, etc., by methods consistent with EPA/state laboratory certification. Assist with training staff on these tasks as required. Able to work independently and manage time effectively
Maintain laboratory equipment, media stocks, standard solution, glassware, sampling containers. Prepare sampling bottles and containers used by staff and the public and provide instructions in proper sample collection. Prepare a wide variety of cultures, media, stains, and related solutions and reagents. Assist with training staff on these tasks as required. Perform required laboratory quality control to ensure accurate and precise data. Compile and maintain accurate records of analytical procedures performed and submit required reports. Assist with training staff on these tasks as required
Conduct samples of public drinking water systems according to Bureau of Water frequency schedule and sites. Collect samples from monitoring stations and wastewater facility discharge points. Respond to and investigate complaints on wastewater facilities, sanitary sewer overflows, and fish kills; evaluate potential causes, initiate corrective actions, or contact responsible parties to ensure the complaint is resolved in a timely manner. Monitor progress of corrective actions taken to solve problems causing unsatisfactory reports. Initiate enforcement actions where appropriate
Advise and assist state, municipal and industrial officials as well as the general public in sampling, laboratory procedures and interpretation of data. Assist in the evaluation and set-up of new and complex laboratory procedures
Perform other duties as required, which includes, but is not limited to, attending periodic staff meetings and training

Required

An associate degree in a related technical field
A high school diploma or GED and two (2) years of environmental health or related experience
Certification in the environmental field qualifies as related experience
Must have valid state driver's license, and ability to operate personal and state-owned vehicles
Ability to provide outstanding customer service in a fast-paced environment
Excellent communication and organizational skills
Work effectively in a team-oriented environment and encourage positive working relationships with coworkers, industry, and government officials
Work independently in a field environment
Ability to successfully complete prescribed technical coursework and pass any test relevant to the position within the probationary period or trial period
Work in all reasonable weather conditions and access non-traditional work environments
Daily travel throughout the state
Occasional overnight travel
Subject to on call or call back 24/7

Preferred

Bachelor's degree in the natural or physical sciences
Familiarity with laboratory methods and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Ability to prioritize and manage time effectively
Data Management skills
